Driven to desperation by 7 month olds trapped wind

My 7 month old has struggled with trapped wind since birth. She’s fine during the day because she doesn’t feed to sleep and I can put her down to bed in the dummy so she’s not feeding to sleep but as soon as she wakes which is usually 30-45 mins after I’ve put her down I often have to feed her to get back off again and then the rest of the night is a viscous cycle of: feeding, getting wind, being uncomfortable and unable to get wind up, feeding for comfort (and sometimes to help shift wind) until she finally manages to get off to sleep again and then waking in pain again.

I try to get her back off without feeding her but that often doesn’t work and I’m the middle of the night I’m looking for the quickest and easiest solution so I have the energy to face the day with 3 children! We are already co-sleeping as soon as I go to bed.

I’ve tried gripe water, colica granules, cutting out dairy, probiotics, and gaviscon (which just made her constipated and made matters worse!) and I’m running out ideas now! It’s so hard to know how to help her when she’s in pain but also get some sleep!

I haven’t been to the doctor Since they have me gaviscon a few months ago so that’s probably what I’ll do next but I’m not sure if there’s anything else they can offer.

I’m just totally exhausted!

Are you sure it's wind? What kind of symptoms are you seeing?

You have my sympathy, my DD2 suffers with it as well and has some difficult nights.

Annach85 · 23/11/2018 22:05

As sure as I can be! Lots of pulling legs up, twisting around when she’s lying down and then often burping as soon as I pick her up (when she’s woken in the evening crying). During the night, she’ll often writh around in me and then go rigid and manage to get a few trumps out and if she’s got enough out she’ll then go back off to sleep but often she can’t get it all up unless she’s completely awake but then I have an awake baby in the middle of the night who’ll only go back to sleep with a feed! For some reason she doesn’t like the dummy at night time... 🙄

Dentinox drops in bottle of milk did the trick for DD if it’s still available.

Annach85 · 23/11/2018 22:42

Does it have to be milk? I’m breastfeeding and expressing is a pain and she won’t always take a bottle so I rarely do it!

By 7 months we had moved to a bottle last thing at night with BF rest of time. Formula is ‘heavier’ and I was given the tip that it would help with sleeping longer. I am an older mum and needed to sleep lol. Worked for us. Completely understand if you’re keen to stay breast only though! I had just reached the ‘I will try anything’ stage!
I think Dentinox might be just to put in bottle so try infacol which is drops in baby’s mouth before feeding. Google both and see what you think.
The dentinox was amazing: it immediately killed any bubbles in bottle.

My nearly 3 month DS was struggling with colic since he was 2 or 3 weeks old (I was dreading 4-5pm as i knew he will be screaming in pain for 45 mins to and hour and there was nothing i could do to help him just wait until it passes is) i have tried infacol did not help dentinox and that also didn't help. My mum got me Sab simplex from germany as it was recommend it to her by a friend. I was really sceptic as nothing helped and i really wish i used it sooner!! I've been using it since and there is no crying in the evenings anymore and my DS is passing wind....a lot! Before he used to wake up at night growling as he wasn't able to pass wind. You can get it from ebay or amazon for £8-9 for 30ml bottle but they are drops so i don't know how would you give it to your LO and have to be given with every feed. They taste like vanilla so not terrible taste neither. Worth a try

Thanks
Annach85 · 24/11/2018 19:27

Thanks, I’ll give both of those things a go and see if either work!

Let us know how it goes.

Yee definitely keep us posted how you got on :)

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/11/2018 07:07

Op I'm in the same situation so following.

After a feed it can be helpful to lie them back (mine usually stretches back) and firmly tummy massage - this can get wind out the bottom end but also then sometimes the top when you pick up and put on shoulder.

Sitting up and rocking back and forth, side to side then clock wise and anti clockwise can bring wind up (after feed when sleepy) and then up on shoulder. Very gentle pressure to their left side so put up on your left shoulder.

However, I'm being rubbish doing this as I'm so tired and he's 99th centile or something stupid. I often feed him laid back so he's on his tummy / side across me and this often brings wind up while he's feeding. We sometimes sleep like this (I make sure we're safe but neither of us move) but again he's getting heavy. I actually think he's trying to sit up, and sleep in his tummy and crawl. I'm not convinced wind is a big issue here now.

When it was, reflux was also an issue and ranitidine was really helpful. He's not had any for a week due to a cold; I'm in 2 minds about trying it again but as I say I'm not sure it's the issue now. Also won't take dummy at night!

My first developed horrendous wind when we started food. It was a nightmare.

AndThereSaw · 26/11/2018 07:15

massage tummy using a little warm oil before bed. go from right to left diagonally.
A full body massage with warm oil isn't a bad thing to aid sleep anyway. Get a book on how to do it or go to a class. It stimulates them all over so as they 'come down' they drift off into quite a heavy sleep. The farts coming out of the babies during a class though is like a trumpet voluntary!

NeurotrashWarrior · 26/11/2018 07:34

Actually I'm going to revisit massage - we did a course. Full body. And more slinging; he was slung so much at first.

birdinatree · 26/11/2018 07:46

I used to have to massage my DS every night before bed, learn the right techniques so you can be most effective. Literally played him like bagpipes getting the farts out - made me laugh every time!

FourFuxxakes · 26/11/2018 08:20

I remember doing baby massage too and found that helpful with my first child. It involved making an 'ILU' shape on the tummy (if you google it there are videos showing you what to do) as well as bicycling the legs, touching shoulders with toes and bringing the knees up to the chest. I remember the massive burps and trumps afterwards and a more restful afternoon after baby massage class which made me think there was something in it.

With the youngest we used dentinox in the bottle but iirc you could put it in a calpol dropper and feed it directly to the baby if you're breastfeeding.

Bethacus · 26/11/2018 12:42

We use Dentinox and it comes with a little dropper that you can use to give directly to baby if you’re breastfeeding.

Annach85 · 27/11/2018 19:23

So an update - I’ve got some dentinox and have tried it in a bottle with a little formula and also with expressed breast milk, she wouldn’t drink either! I tried with the dropper and she (grumpily!) has it and it did seem effective in bringing up wind so I’m going to try using it through the night, it’s just difficult to do it without waking her up lots!

I may also see if I can do some massage with her although she’s very wriggly!

Happy to see that you have some success. If you want to see how it works, put some ordinary milk into a jar and shake till frothy then add Dentinox.
Dentinox and Infacol contain the same stuff but I think they have different flavours so worth trying both? I think Dentinox might have been a bit more highly flavoured but it's all a long time ago for me now! You will get v adept at popping some into baby's mouth - we put the Dentinox into the bottle but I see you weren't able to get away with that - my friend used to squirt Infacol into her baby son's mouth before feeding .
