My baby has been sleeping through for 5 months but I still have the monitor on at night - is this madness?

When did you turn yours off?

We stopped using the monitor when dd turned two and wanted the sleep with the door open so we'd hear her anyway

soupmaker · 20/11/2018 22:22

Never had one to turn off. Kept doors open once the DC moved out of our room at 6 months.

molemonkey · 20/11/2018 22:23

Not very helpful but i didnt have one for either of my two.
Many of my friends left it till they were a year old.

spreadmarmznotmisery · 20/11/2018 22:26

His cot and our bed are literally only the wall thickness apart. I might turn it off tonight

We only had a monitor on if we were downstairs. Our bedroom we'll backs onto his bedroom wall so if he woke in the night, we heard him. He's about to turn 1 in 3 weeks.

Our bedroom wall*

I turned mine off around a year as I can hear her easily through the wall and open door. I sometimes put it back on when she has a cold though just to keep an extra ear out

SleepingStandingUp · 20/11/2018 22:31

Off?? I don't understand. You mean like 8 am when you get up??

DS is 3.5, small house and yes it's on right now

hazeyjane · 20/11/2018 22:32

Ds is 8....its still on!

Namechanger55555 · 20/11/2018 22:33

Madness!
DS1 Switched it off at 6 months. (4 months in his own room. Still wasn't sleeping through but I realised I could hear his every noise anyway!)

DS2 never used it! He sleeps in the room below my bedroom. I can hear him if he wakes up (light sleeper). In which case I'll go to him. I'm not sure why I used it for so long first time round!

Gradeup · 20/11/2018 22:33

DD is 19 months and we still have it on all through the night we can hear her if she cries from our room but I like to hear her breathing in the night and can check on her easy if she cries out in the night as often we don’t need to go in she will settle back down

Namechanger55555 · 20/11/2018 22:34

@hazeyjane 8 years?? Shock but why?

piglet81 · 20/11/2018 22:37

My son is 3y 6m and we're still using it... I can't bear not to, just in case.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/11/2018 22:37

@hazeyjane I'll be you in 5 years haha

hazeyjane · 20/11/2018 22:39

Because he is disabled, wakes a lot and has horrendous reflux, which I can hear over the monitor (if it sounds really bad one of us sits with him propped up asleep on us).

LancashireTea · 20/11/2018 22:46

Did will be 4 in Feb and I've only turned it off in the last couple of months.

Tbh it wasn't helping my evening anxiety and she gets up at all hours either way.

Sparrowlegs248 · 20/11/2018 22:47

I have a 3.5 yr old and 21 months. They are upstairs, I'm downstairs, so it's on. I switch it off when I go to bed.

anniehm · 20/11/2018 22:59

Never had one, my dd had a cry that woke the whole apartment block so no need!

dinodiva · 21/11/2018 09:17

DD had one until 2.5 and we needed it for DS (it also plays white noise which is what we were mainly using it for by then). DS has the white noise bit on but I’ve used the monitor about 3 times (he’s 6 months).

SoyDora · 21/11/2018 09:19

Definitely didn’t use it past a year. I think some people must have huge houses! I’ve always been able to hear mine when they wake up.

Topsyloulou · 21/11/2018 09:36

DS is 4 & we have a monitor on for him in the evening as we can't hear him downstairs. It's more for the video so we can see what he is up to! We turn off when we go upstairs as we can hear him then. DD is 1 & we have the monitor on all night, again mainly for the video so I can see what she is doing if she stirs & see if I need to get up & go to her or if she is going to settle herself.

SoyDora · 21/11/2018 09:40

Mine literally just go to bed and sleep though. At 5 and 3 if they do wake up (or can’t get to sleep) they just come downstairs to find us. Have been doing the same since before they were 2. Absolutely no need for a monitor.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/11/2018 09:40

Our house is tiny but he's at the back of the house and between the floor and the telly o etc I can't hear him til he screams loud. I want to hear him when he's quotely whinging

MollyHuaCha · 21/11/2018 09:43

Never used one.

Bees1 · 24/11/2018 20:14

When he could shout mumma! Probably about 18montha, before then we had a couple of occasions where he was sick and we only knew about it because of the video monitor also the video part was useful to see if he was asleep or causing havoc! 🤣
