How to get an overtired baby to sleep!

She's 9 months old, last woke up from a half hour nap at nursery at 2.15, and only had 15 mins in the morning. We got home around 5.30 and at 6 had a bath, then boob and bed. Normally never fails, she was rubbing her eyes so clearly tired.

10 mins after transfer she was really upset so we got her out for a top up and resettle. And here we are at nearly half nine. She will not sleep. She is never like this, ever. We have tried.

Anbusol
Snufflebabe (She's been snotty this past week)
Calpol
Gripe Water
A dummy (she never has one usually but thought we'd try)

The only thing that placates her is boob. But just when I think she's dropping off she tenses up, pushes me and starts fighting it.

MIL suggested leaving her for 5 mins, going in and shushing then going back out. She howled, absolutely howled. Tears the lot. And pulled herself up in her sleepbag.

We've just checked her bum (all ok just a bit wet), I'm trying boob again and if this doesn't work, the car.

Just at a loss, not a boast I swear, she normally goes down, we have a wake around 11ish for milk and that's it. She has been getting more fretful in her sleep lately though.

Give her to Dwight Schrute

Not a lot of help unfortunately but going through similar!

Are you able to feed her laying next to her until she falls asleep for long enough for you to transfer her? Is she warm enough? Ds tends to wake up more often when the temperatures drop.

It could also be a developmental phase? I’m sure I’ve heard that around this age is when separation anxiety is particularly bad.

I keep telling myself that ds won’t be like this when he’s 18 so it’s best to make the most of every second that he’s awake Grin

With that final boob she zonked. She woke briefly on transfer and I thought oh shit, but raced out of the nursery and she's out, at 10pm. Really don't know what on earth could have caused it, my guess would be overtiredness, if it's a developmental thing I'll find out tomorrow night Sad That was a rough one, DH has been ill these past two days so I've been holding the fort, it's my second week back at work and I'm kerknacked!

I hope you have a better night tonight, I’ll keep my fingers crossed. I think as they are still so little it’s best to do what works, such as boob whenever is needed, and when theyre a little older and can understand things a bit more it’ll be easier to reason with them. These little ones love to keep us on our toes don’t they Grin it won’t last forever, I hope anyway!

Has she only recently started nursery? It could be a reason for wanting more confit

Comfort

Blow on her eyes gently. She will close them and hopefully drift off :) dad used to do that to me!

We had another mare of a night but think we know what's wrong. She vomited phelgm twice which was bloody scary, as she was gagging on it coming up and went bright red in the face Sad Her cold just won't seem to shift! She also has the flushed cheeks and constant dribble that signals teething so a double whammy poor mite.

After the second lot of sick, I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep for worry so she slept with me (DH went downstairs, she's a mover and a sprawler) again quite a fretful night waking up and getting upset, but I was there for boob on demand and to get fluids back. She was so tired this morning too. I've had about 4 hours broken sleep, but don't feel too bad weirdly.

Have you tried one of those suction thingies that can suck mucus out of the baby's nose?

YouBetterWORK · 23/11/2018 14:18

We have one of those, it's a battery operated one (could never bring myself to use the sucking one, I know snot doesn't actually go in your mouth but 🤢) We've been using that in conjunction with saline.

I think we've turned a corner, last night she slept for England so she's hopefully fighting it off, still a bit wet coughy and snotty but much more herself! It's so upsetting to see them ill, and they catch everything going round Sad
