Getting rid of dummy

Hi
I'm trying to get rid of my 6m old son's dummy for sleep.
I'm sick to death of getting up every 45 mins to an hour every night to put it back in and I'm not even exaggerating.
I've put him down for his first nap of the day which is 9am (he usually wakes at 7 but woke at 6 today). I can't put him down any earlier as 9 is when I get back home from the school run. He was clearly ready for it as his eyes were slowly going when he was in the pram on the way home, but as soon as I put him down (awake) all he's done is roll around and mess about for an hour, like he's not even tired. I've left him as he wasn't actually crying but he's now started crying. Do I put him down after his feed at half 10 or wait until his next nap at 12:30? He's going to be over tired either way I know, and i know our routine will be out the window u til its sorted. Please tell me it doesn't take too long for them to get used to having no dummy!! Anyone else took it away cold turkey and been successful? I just want me and him to get a decent bloody sleep. I never took my daughter's away and she still had it at 3 years old for bedtime, only got rid of it just before her 4th birthday and I don't want to go that long again.

Thank you
