Baby waking herself up with wind

Aries456 · 03/11/2018 04:44

Hi all, my 7 week old keeps waking 90 mins after start of a feed because of gas. She starts squirming and then when she does pass wind she cries. Tonight I have spent an hour holding and soothing her (That is on top of the 30 mins post feed I held her). So each night I am up for a almost an hour with 1st feed (around 11/12) then again around (2/3am) and then she wakes 30 mins after i put her down and i am awake again for another hour at least (around 3.30-4.30). I am shattered! Any ideas how to stop the windy wake up?! She has just been moved on to aptimil pepti but this started happening 4 nights before the switch.

Try burping her halfway through a feed as well as at the end to try and get as much up as possible. Bicycle her legs after as well.

Colief drops are really good, saved my sanity when dd was tiny! Baby guts are really immanture at this age, so you will find she gets less gassy as time goes on, but it’s hard work when you’re in the middle of it!

Morning @teddy! Yes she is REALLY hard to burp for some reason. She is my 3rd so it's not don't know how to burp a baby but for most times I don't get anything up despite patting, running, standing, on the shoulder... and I do try leg cycles sometimes but she mostly just cries loads when I do and it wakes her up properly. Gah just can't wait to get to 12 weeks and the worst be over! Bring on Chridlstmas I say! Ps I will get some colief and try... I did use dentonox but she just spat most of it out and cried about it...

*not like I don't know how to burp a baby

Colief goes in the milk, so it makes it much easier to give! I tried infacol first which dd thought was hell on earth, so gave these up sharpish! It works really quickly as well, so you should see some improvement within a couple of days.

My little boy did this! He grew out of it at around 12weeks but he was a nightmare to wind, never sick and trumpeted all night. No advice really but cycling legs helped for him some times

Thanks for advice. Will try the colief - does it flavour the milk though? Dentonox can go in the bottle but is such a strong flavour she doesn't like it. I feel so close to giving up on the aptimil... She is only taking 2oz and crying like in pain at the end of 2oz and wotnt drink more but seems to want it = even more crying than usual... starting to feel quite frantic!

I didn’t find it changed the flavour, you do need to make up a bottle in advance though as it takes 30 mins to work, which is a faff but honestly worth it!

The new aptamil formula is notorious for causing digestive issues in babies, so maybe worth giving Hipp a go? I bf dd, but when she stayed at my parents she had Hipp and no problems at all.

TeddyIsaHe · 03/11/2018 13:13

How are her nappies btw? Is she having mucousy poi’s? Any rashes on her skin at all?

TeddyIsaHe · 03/11/2018 13:16

Poos!

HelenMummyof2 · 03/11/2018 13:18

My LO was (and is) just like this! Upon recommendation I moved to hipp organic formula and she is much better with it. We also bathe before bed as it relaxes her tummy muscles. My LO is now 5.5 months and still suffers, upon pharmacists advice I put the tiniest of tiny amount of peppermint oil in cooled boiled water and gave it to LO. Obviously is tastes horrible so she only had a couple of slurps. This definitely helped too, stops their tummy spasms apparently. Not sure is 7 weeks is too early but might be worth a word with the pharmacist? Good luck xxx

Aries456 · 03/11/2018 14:28

@teddy yes her poos are really runny and she has bad skin on her face which flares when she feeds. This plus how my other 2 have rwsxted to formula and cow's milk mean the doctor thinks she has CMPA hence the change to aptimil pepti. Bit symptoms have stayed the same... Plus extra crying in pain with feeds and I can't sooth her with milk anymore. Feel like we have gone backwards.

@helenmummy my and moved to hipp organic as she couldn't handle cow and gate. But since we have just started down the path to move away from cow's milk based formula not sure a move back onto another one will help. She was slightly better on kendamil than cow and gate and so tempted to go back to it...but maybe I need to go the other direction and go for non- CMA based formula.... I really don't think I can see out 2 weeks on this stuff. It is just not right to see her fight with herself about whether she wants to drink milk or not.

Oh god it’s so tough. If she’s CMPA then it will take 2 weeks to get out of her system, so a formula change will just make t worse now. Oh you poor thing! Try the colief definitely as it breaks down the lactose, so might give you more immediate relief.

Aries456 · 03/11/2018 15:29

Thanks @teddy. I appreciate you taking the time to message! I didn't expect her symptoms to go away over night and thought it would take a couple of weeks to take effect...but I didn't expect her to be crying in pain when drinking the new milk.. also, we had just had somee success with an osteopath thst meant i could actually put her down in the day for naps that arent on me and now she has stopped doing thst again and is back to crying all thr time. Just feel instinctively that it isn't right. I guess I will just tell doctor everything on Monday and see what he says.

If she's struggling with the Pepti then it could be that she needs an amino acid formula like neocate, rather than an extensively hydrolysed formula.
