Clothes/covers for toddler?

With winter coming I'm a bit stuck on what to put DD (20 months) in at bedtime. She is still in a sleeping bag currently but often takes these off and ends up asleep in just a vest. Tried a sheet but she won't stay under it. Do I just get some warm pyjamas/babygrows and no covers or what? Worried she'll be cold (although our house does hold heat fairly well).

The gro company have this tool on their website that tells you what your child should be wearing to bed to keep their temperature just right. It asks age, weight and temperature of your room then tells you what they should be wearing using the information you gave.
I used this a few times because I was worried my DD would be too cold/hot etc seemed to be right for me Smile

But then if your DD likes to take things off during the night then I don't know what to suggest haha

This isn't flippant but I'd shove a blanket or duvet in the cot and if she's cold surely she'll have the sense to cover up. Ds is 21 months and I've just ordered him a cot bed duvet for the winter.

We had this issue with dd and used padded sleepsuits. They were tricky to get hold of then (couple of years back) but eBay and Mothercare had them. Looked adorable in them too Grin

@SofaKingFedUp Yes that's the problem - I don't think they have a 'no sleeping bag' option!

@AlpineButterfly I don't know what she's old enough to figure out to do that if she's cold?! It seems like common sense but is it for a toddler? I have also wondered about covering her up myself once she's asleep (I think most wriggling occurs whilst going to sleep) but worry is wake her up!

@Misty9 Thanks, will look into those! Although she has also undone her babygrow on a few occasions so maybe this wouldn't solve the problem... I need something that's hard to undo! Buttons maybe?

Or she'll just have to be cold.

We do regular pyjamas- style wise like a long sleeved t-shirt/leggings and then a toddler duvet from Ikea. I agree that if they’re cold they’ll have the sense to pull it up.

feelitinyourbones · 25/10/2018 16:52

Thin onesies with duvet/blankets. Not the fleecy onesies that might cause overheating but some of them are thinner and more breathable. If we didn't have these my wriggly DC2 would always be chilly as covers just won't stay on.

Mammatron · 25/10/2018 16:52

My DS hates having covers or sleeping bags resting on his feet, kicks and kicks until he either gets them off or wakes himself up trying. We use these jojo sleep suits, seem to keep him warm!

anniehm · 25/10/2018 17:30

Fleece sleepsuit and a light duvet. Mine were in beds by that age so got up in the night

SputnikBear · 25/10/2018 17:34

DS wears a zip up sleepsuit inside his sleeping bag.

Utini · 25/10/2018 17:46

We use Jojo sleep snugglers for 2 year old DD as she hates her legs being restricted in a sleeping bag and won't keep covers on.

They're like a sleeping bag but with legs and detachable arms. More like a padded sleep suit really.

AlpineButterfly · 25/10/2018 18:09

@vgiraffe i might be giving my boys too much credit but if it's cold in the car my eldest makes a brrr sound and grabs his car blanket. He's 21 months. The 9 month old has also recently started grabbing his cat blanket too. I might be completely wrong though tbf

TwllBach · 25/10/2018 18:11

DS was in a bed from 14 months and is now 2.5. He’s always worn pyjamas - he’s in the next snuggle ones atm because it’s cold oop north all of a sudden!! Last winter he had a duvet and a knitted blanket - I would cover him with both if he had kicked them off while falling asleep

Lost5stone · 25/10/2018 18:12

I've seen ones on Amazon that are duvets that have zips to the sheet so they can't kick them off. They were expensive though.

We just went with the duvet, she kicked it off for the first few weeks but soon started pulling it up in her sleep

vgiraffe · 25/10/2018 19:49

Thanks all! Maybe I'm not giving her enough credit and she would cover herself if cold. To be honest she doesn't really seem to feel the cold so might just stay asleep anyway.

I am planing to move her to a bed soon and know she might be unsettled to start so want to minimise reasons for her to wake up! @anniehm I'm not sure what you meant by your comment - they were up in the night or you? And related to being cold or something else?

Can you find a sleeping bag that dc can't get out of.
DS3 has only recently stopped waking up if he's cold

vgiraffe · 25/10/2018 22:38

I did have a google for escape-proof sleeping bags but no luck. Maybe I'll invent one and get rich... The best I could find was a zip down the front and a suggestion on an old mumsnet thread to put it on backwards! I'm a bit wary of spending money on a new sleeping bag (or padded sleepsuit) when it might not work though so think I'll try with a cover first and see how we go!

She might just be like my dd and run very hot. I'm a cold fish so don't understand it but she usually has no covers on when I check on her at my bedtime, yet feels warm to touch. Ds is like me and sleeps with full pjs and blankets Grin
