Congested 5mo

Hi all,

My DS has got a horrible cold and is so congested he can't lie down to sleep, as soon as I lay him down he starts crying

The only way he is sleeping is on me or in his bouncer chair, will he be okay to stay sleeping in his bouncer? I'm worrying about falling asleep in case it isn't.
Any advice would be great, thank you!

Will he sleep in his pushchair (the sit up type not the flat bit?)
Or if he will only sleep on you id just make it as safe as possible around you...cellular blanket etc instead of a duvet and no pillows hanging about etc. (My ds is a Velcro baby and has spent the last 9 months wanting to sleep in my arms and although I’d rather not I’ve fallen asleep many a time with him on my chest or in my arms. I just try and make it as safe as possible.
Hope he’s better very soon!

JustMe10 · 23/10/2018 02:20

I've not tried but he probably would, it would keep him at more or less the same angle as his bouncer, will he be safe in the pushchair?

I've never slept with him on me or in the bed with me, I honestly think I would be too worried and wouldn't be able to relax enough to sleep lol!
Thank you I'm hoping he is as well, he has always been a fantastic sleeper so I'm not used to this lol!

When mine were small and had colds like this we used to raise the head end of the cot a bit by putting books under the feet, not a huge amount but just enough to make a difference. Would this be worth trying?

JustMe10 · 23/10/2018 04:01

Anything is worth trying at this point thank you

Some ideas:

Snufflebabe vapour rub
Saline nasal spray
Olbas oil on muslin hung near cot
Bowl of hot water in the room with olbas oil or similar

JustMe10 · 23/10/2018 09:34

I have been using the vapour rub and saline drops but he's not liking the drops so getting a spray might be easier, thank you I think I will be stocking up on more supplies today!

Vicks make a plug in too. My gp told me to put vicks on the soles of dds feet and to take her into the bathroom with me when I had a shower.

JustMe10 · 23/10/2018 10:30

Yeah I saw that calpol do a plug is as well, I think I will definitely go get one

I'd really recommend a humidifier for his room. I use it when my daughter gets a sniff and it usually stops her getting a fun on cold. Amazon have them for about £12/15. Wouldn't be without one now

HerSymphonyAndSong · 23/10/2018 14:12

The plug ins are great but I get a bit twitchy about the fire risks so I don’t like leaving them overnight

JustMe10 · 23/10/2018 19:18

I'm the same I'm not too keen on leaving anything plugged in at night

Do you have a nasal aspirator? I find using it just before bed and when they wake up in the night stops them having the panic about not being able to breathe.

Lollyice · 23/10/2018 19:25

Rub some Vicks /snuffly baby on the soles of his feet and cover with socks or baby gro.

JustMe10 · 23/10/2018 21:07

I do have a nasal aspirator but he will not let me get it anywhere near his nose which means I'm struggling with the nasal drops as well!
And il try some of the snuffle on the bottom of his feet thank you!

Yeah, they really hate the aspirator, but it’s worth persevering as the relief is instant. We always made it a two person job, you feel mean when they scream their head off but at some point they calm down.

I find the calpol plug in amazing; I normally put it on half hour before DD goes to bed to fill the room then switch it off when I go to bed so it’s been on 3ish hours and makes a difference to the whole night

April2020mom · 23/10/2018 22:49

How old is he now? What about a white noise machine at night? I’m a big fan of essential oils at night time to help them fall asleep as well. Hopefully he’ll get better soon. The last time I had a cold, the steamed bowl was so helpful.

DSHathawaysLover · 24/10/2018 09:57

We're going through similar at the moment. DH got some advice from a very experienced (mum) colleague who suggested....onion. Seriously. Chop up a small onion and put on a plate in baby's room.

When he told me I was a bit Hmm , but we tried it in desperation. It worked. The downside is the lingering smell (only in the room, not on baby or fabrics). The nursery window will be open all day today!

JustMe10 · 24/10/2018 10:13

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions!
Probably because of a mixture of things but I was able to put him in his cot to sleep last night

Snot sucker or a mother's kiss Envy not envy! It's instant relief poor things can't blow their noses. Glad your baby is improving. I hope it passes quickly.

JustMe10 · 24/10/2018 12:13

I call it a snot sucker as well 😂
Hopefully he is on the mend now!
