Screaming at nap/bed time

This problem has been going on for a few months now with dd2, who is 19 months. Every time she's put in her cot, either for her daytime nap or at bedtime, she screams the place down for at least 20 minutes (longest has been about 45 minutes). I know there is nothing wrong her, and most of the time she is tired. I usually just leave her until she falls asleep but it breaks my heart to hear her getting into such a state. (If I go to try and calm her down, as soon as I leave the room she starts again and we're back to square one.) If it were just her daytime nap (which she has anytime between 11-1pm) then I'd stop putting her down, but she's the same at nighttime too.

DH thinks its because she thinks she's "missing out on something", but dd1 and 2 go to bed at the same time. We've tried keeping dd2 up later than dd1, and although she loves staying up later, it's still the same when she goes to bed. DH also thinks its because she doesn't like being on her own. I've thought about putting her into a bed but DH is agains this idea. Any suggestions anyone?

Kando, I'm going through something similar with my 22 month old dd though it's only a very recent problem in our case and seems to be connected to nap times rather than bed times. I've got a thread about it a few down '1st time sleep problems in 22 month old'. I don't know if any of the suggestions made to me on that thread may be of use to you?

It's painful to hear them cry isn't it?

My 22 month old has started doing this for the past couple of weeks, but to make it even more annoying, she is selective so each time I climb the stairs to put her down, I don't know what response I will get and it is stressful wondering if she will roll over and sleep or start screeching.

I normally just say 'it is bye byes now' and have to put up with 5-10 mins of hysterics - which for me is like an hour .

I find the night time worse as by then I am knackered (am 41 weeks pregnant) and just want her to go to bed so I can slump on the sofa. We have tried putting her to bed slighter later and some nights it works, some it doesn't so I have no suggestions unfortunately.

Hopefully they are just testing their 'power' and it is a phase.

xx
