Best soundproofing options

Hi there,
We just moved and we have a lovely new neighbour. She's quite old and needs sleep. Unfortunately, all our bedrooms share a wall with hers and our lovely son is not sleeping through the night in the slightest. He wakes up 3 times a night then is awake at 5:30am. He's 18 months so has a severe set of lungs on him.

We're knackered but that's secondary to us. We don't want to cause any problems for our neighbour.

Has anyone ever done their own soundproofing on a wall? What do you recommend? Professional or DIY?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

We ordered from soundservice too but I wouldn't order from them again as they're quite expensive. Their website contains all the info you need for the best solution for you.

It all depends on how much room space you have. You can build a secondary plasterboard wall with an inch or more gap from the existing wall - the gap will help.

We didn't have the space so had glued rubber sheets (2-3mm thick) against the brick wall then glued two sheets of acoustic plasterboard (I think this is just denser and thicker than normal plasterboard) onto that.

You can buy the rubber sheeting on ebay cheaper than what soundservice charge (though their website is good for suggesting what to use).. and plasterboard is easy to buy online.

In our case it was to reduce noise from the neighbour - it reduced it considerably but not completely. It blocks loud voices but not very loud or very heavy bass music.
