So after much discussion and debate between me and DH, we are starting CC / Sleep Training / whatever it's called tonight.

Really nervous and really feel conflicted as we both always said we wouldn't ever do this. But after 1 month of our previously self settling pretty much sleeping through DS turning into no self settling and constant night waker we feel at end of our tether.

We have read up about how to wait 2 minutes before going in but is this 2 minutes of actual crying or do I count moaning?

Also... When I do pop in to settle him, do I have to stay till he has stopped moaning completely? As this could take about 10 minutes as he sometime won't stop till he falls asleep?

Oh idk I guess I just feel so bad for doing this

melsw not sure about the dummy, I should imagine if it requires you going in to give him the dummy then you might have to teach them to find it yourself or wean them off it? And yeah you have to do the CC through the night

I can't believe how well this has gone so far. Night 1 was 20 mins of on/off crying then she slept till 2. Woke up 3 times in totally each time was a quick pop-in and pat and she was back asleep in seconds. Night 2 she went out like a light till 5 then a brief 5 minute resettle and out till 6.55.

When we did it with DS we took dummy away at same time (although it crept back over the following months!) but this time we've left it with her.

Thanks DappledThings - so do you pop the dummy back in when you go in to resettle? I did wonder about taking the dummy away at the same time I must admit in case that’s part of the problem...

We did CC when our DD was 14 months @melsw. She had a dummy and I don't think it made much difference to the process. Within three nights she was either sleeping through or we had to go to her once for a quick resettle. Occasionally when we went to her she had lost her dummy at the other end of the cot, or it had fallen off the edge but I was pretty sure she must be finding it herself and reinserting it most of the time. I think I would have felt a bit mean taking her dummy away as a source of comfort and doing CC at the same time! But I guess you could also look at it as only putting them through the stress once - I still have to go through the upset again when we do take her dummy away.

We made sure when we gave it to her at the beginning of the night or when she lost it during the night, we put it in her hand so she got in the habit of putting it in her mouth herself. We also got her one of those comforters you can attach to the dummy to make it easier to find.

Good luck! My DD is now nearly two, and mostly a pretty good sleeper having been truly awful!

Oh and if it's any reassurance to those of you reading who have just done it with 14/15 month olds, it lasted and we have never had to repeat it. She occasionally goes through phases when she is teething and sleeps less well, but she is clearly unhappy so we go to her for cuddles and painkillers. As soon as she is feeling better she goes back to sleeping well by herself, so we have never gone through the CC process again.

Yes, popping dummy back in and she's going straight out.

With DS we dropped dummy at same time. After about 3 months he was mostly sleeping through but started waking at 5. If we gave him dummy at 5 he then went straight back out till nearly 8. Then he started waking earlier and we started giving dummy earlier so after a while we just started off with it at start of night again and he was still sleeping through.

He still has it now at 2.8 but he's only had it for sleep since he was 10 months so I'm not too bothered.
