1 nap a day or 2?

I'm so unsure of what to do. My 14mo is somewhere between 1 and 2 naps a day.

If we are at home all day:
7/8 am wake up
10:30-11:30 am nap
3:30 pm nap
8 pm bed

If he is at nursery or we happen to go out in the morning:
7/8 am wake up
12:30 pm nap
5-6 pm (breastfeed after nursery and nap)
9/10 pm bed.

If we try to skip the 2nd nap, he'll be very unhappy, end up dozing later and pushing back his bedtime even further. But occasionally he will skip his 2nd nap and be in bed at 8pm.

Should I push him to skip his second nap? I don't know what is best for him. I'd like him to get 11-12h sleep overnight (we were told by a friend how important 12h a night is needed from the start as it can impact academic achievement later in life), but I hate to deny him a breastfeed after nursery (he only started 2 months ago) and he gets quite upset and hyper if we try to keep him up.

(Adding to this that his sleep overnight is generally terrible for me - I think he can't link sleep cycles and settle himself so he needs to be fed to sleep every time he rouses. It used to be 4-5 times a night but it's gotten much, much worse this week, maybe 3-4 times an hour some hours, I've lost track...)

Any advice would be much appreciated!

My 15mo wakes at 8ish, naps at 9.30 - 12 and naps again at 4-6 And usually has between 11 and 12hrs a night. I was worrying this was too much but assume he wouldn't sleep if he didn't need but if he's was waking in the night I'd give him water only because if it's not something he really enjoys then he will eventually stop waking. Well that's what I'd do. If he has 1 nap is his sleep better at night? Also we inherit our sleep patterns so is you or your husband a bad sleeper?
