when can they have a duvet rather than grobag and is it a good idea?

ds is 10 months and has been standing up in his grobag for a few months now...sometimes he bashes his chin tho...can i give him a duvet? is it a good idea? what about a pillow?

he is fully mobile (crawling, cruising, stand up sit down, walking with walker, standing on his own for few seconds) so does that mean that the cot death risk is lessened?

anyone with experience of this?

tia

they can have pillows and duvets from about 12 months

Sozie · 24/08/2004 14:15

I believe that 12 months is the recommended time for duvets (low tog value) and pillows in this country.

Kayleigh · 24/08/2004 14:19

Yup, ds1 had a cot duvet from a year. He rarely moved in his sleep so was happy under that. Ds2 was a wriggler and was in grobags until he went in a bed at 2.5 as he could never keep a duvet anywhere near him.

oiseau · 24/08/2004 14:31

I'm glad you asked this - my DS is 16mths and is still in his bag and I can't imagine a duvet working for one minute. Whenever I go in to check on him he is in a different place in the cot and obviously shuffles and rotates around all night. Would a pillow help him to know which way is up do you think?

Sozie · 24/08/2004 14:36

My ds is 22 months and sometimes the pillow is on top of him and sometimes on the floor. He sleeps with his bum in the air most the time

Kayleigh · 24/08/2004 14:39

Actually come to think of it mine never had a pillow in their cots. Just when they went into beds. I read somewhere that it is better for babies/toddlers to not have a pillow. No idea where I read it though.

dd2 has a duvet, now that she's 14 months, and has learned to pull it up round her, bless.

enid · 24/08/2004 14:50

we took dd2 out of her grobag at about 12 months - she was too much of a wriggler and kept getting twisted up in it. We bought a very nice 4.5 tog cot bed duvet from the White company - expensive but lovely and light.

We put her back in her grobag recently to stop her scratching herself (chicken pox) and now she refuses to have her duvet back!! She insists on the grobag and a 'bankint' (blanket) every night and screams blue murder if I suggest the duvet, so that may have been £35 down the drain

KateandtheGirls · 24/08/2004 14:50

My eldest never had a pillow until she went into a bed. She never had a grobag though, because I wasn't aware of them at the time. She just used to wear thick PJs and a couple of thin layers on top of her.

My little one is 29 months and still in a crib. She was in a grobag since she was newborn, but about 4 months ago decided she didn't like it anymore. She would kick her feet and cry and yell "My feet. They're hiding." So at that point I gave up on the grobag and she has had a couple of thin blankets ever since.

My almost 5 year old will now keep her covers on most of the time, although she still ends up sleeping upside down on her bed at times. The 2 year old will only keep her blankets on if she falls to sleep as soon as I put her in bed. Otherwise she kicks them off. Now luckily it's August and we're in Florida, so even with air conditioning it's hot. If she stays under her blankets she gets too hot. I just adjust them before I go to bed, while she is asleep.

Why are you so anxious to get him out of the grobag? If I was you I'd leave him in it as long as he's comfortable. It's much easier. And there's no reason to introduce a pillow yet either.

enid · 24/08/2004 14:57

We gave dd2 a pillow when she was about 18 months because we thought it looked sweet . But she hated it and threw it out in disgust until I gave up.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/08/2004 15:04

because the grobag constricts him enough that he sometimes knocks his chin...just like you or me would if we tried to walk around in a sleeping bag! so is it dangerous to try a duvet now? and if so why?

I would say no - but would shell out for a really lightweight feathery one rather than a big puffy synthetic one.

enid · 24/08/2004 15:15

I mean no, its not dangerous, rather than no, don't use a duvet.

albert · 24/08/2004 15:18

My DS was born in Denmark and in the maternity ward all new borns sleep with duvets and the staff recomend that you continue this once you leave. I did, no problems until DS started to kick it off and then I moved over to a grobag (DS about 6 months by then) which DS used until he moved to a 'big' bed aged almost 3. He never had a pillow though.

motherinferior · 24/08/2004 15:26

We got some cheap lightweight ones from Sainsbury's a couple of months ago.

Piffleoffagus · 24/08/2004 15:35

I abandoned all methods due to no success and dd just sleeps with socks and jamas on, if she manages to get under her duvet then fine, she hated grobags as I found to great expense...
She has her pillow she had it at about 16 mths, her cuddle rug and a lambskin under her. She is never cold!

sponge · 24/08/2004 16:40

I wouldn't give him a pillow until at least a year but no reason by the sound of it not to introduce a light duvet or blankets instead of grobag now.
The cot death risk is hugely reduced from about 8 months so as long as he's mobile he should be fine.

hana · 24/08/2004 17:20

have never used a grobag on dd (dont think they existed 3 years ago? or not like they do now) and she's had her duvet from when she was in her bed at about 16 months

twick · 24/08/2004 20:56

oiseau, my 22 month dd is a wriggler too so haven't attempted duvets just yet. I did try a pillow though and I don't think I found her with her head on it once. Usually her feet in fact. .

sophable, I'd tend to wait until 12 months if I were you, just to keep within recommended guidelines and because you might find a bumped chin is a lesser nuisance than a baby waking up all the time with no covers on! Dd did the bumped chin stuff, I think she might have also done it without the grobag when she was at your ds' stage. Now she can walk quite well across the room in hers. .

Tommy · 24/08/2004 21:03

This morning, at 2am, my DS1 waddled into our bedroom in his grobag - he's 2y7m. Don't know if that's relevant or helpful but he's still in his. We asked him if he wanted a duvet when he went into his big boys bed but he doesn't seem that bothered. I'm wondering if they do grobags in the next size up

Heathcliffscathy · 25/08/2004 09:49

pmsl at cute babies walking in grobags! :o

Well, I laughed too sophable, the first time dd did it. I'd been trying to get her to have a bit more sleep on a fold-out bed in her room when she woke up very early one morning. She went to get up off the bed and I said 'don't be silly, darling, you can't walk in your sleeping bag.' She silently stood, did a monk's shuffle across the room with her arms out like a tightrope walker, opened her bedroom door, looked back at me over her shoulder and said 'clever girl! good fun!'

lapsedrunner · 25/08/2004 11:22

ds is 23 months and still in cot and grobag. He can stand up and walk around his cot in the grobag, and can also unzip it and climb out! He moves so much when aslee that i plan to leave him in grobag (and cot) as long as possible. He doesn' have a pillow and yes they do do growbags in a 3-6 year size.
