Is it possible to get a 9 month old to sleep in. Just a little bit, not till really late, 8am would be lovely.

I think we have now combatted the waking nights (thank god!) but I am now left with a child that wants to get up anytime from 5am onwards.

Atm he has 2 naps sometimes 3. One in a morning, and one early afternoon. Sometimes one right before bedtime.
Come 6pm he is totally past it and wants to go to bed but I stretch him out till 7pm and he goes to bed with dd.

So really he's having about 10 hours sleep minimum.

Should I drop a nap or something or just resign myself to the fact that he's an early riser ?

I would try to make his afternoon nap a touch later and stop him napping before bedtime. We have two children and one's an early riser and the other isn't, so I guess it's just the luck of the draw!

Nbg · 09/06/2007 07:52

Oh I know!
He is a real shock to the system.
DD always slept through and slept till 10am!!!
I am not used to this lol.

Join the club! 6 am is a lie in, in our house! I tried a later bedtime but to no avail. I have darkened the room but I can't stop those birds singing. I'm not convinced all babies need 12 hours. My ds 10 months is crawling a lot now so I'm hoping it will tire him out.

Tamdin · 09/06/2007 07:54

sorry nbg don't have any advice re lie ins (apart from black out blinds)but wanted to know how you stopped the night wakings? ds is 16m and still wakes at least twice
Am pretty used to it but obviously if we could 'fix' it (without cc) that would be fantastic
also agree maybe make the afternoon nap later (if poss) and drop the pre bed one. x

yogimum · 09/06/2007 07:56

why is it that girls are better sleepers? Well all the ones I know are!

brimfull · 09/06/2007 07:57

Ime children are either early risers or sleeper inners and there's not a lot you can do.
I wouldn't drop the nap personally but I suppose it may be worth a try.

brimfull · 09/06/2007 07:58

my dsis great at sleeping late,he's asleep now.My dd is the early riser, although not so much now she's a teen

Nbg · 09/06/2007 08:01

Yes I think black out blinds are a good idea. Your right though about the birds.
Sodding things lol

Tamadin, we were a bit naughty and just gave him a bottle in his cot. I laid him on his side and he just fed himself.
It had got to the point where he was just wanting me to cuddle him and he wasn't even feeding.
Also my friends mum gave me this cd which seems to work wonders too.
I call it Plinky Plonky music lol. Basically it sounds like those metal prongs that you get on a music box but its in a chinese style of music, if that makes any sense.
Her mum got it in Borneo and when my friend had her baby they played it for her and it seemed to settle her. When she heard about my ds she said try this cd and the first night we played it he settled on his own, without a bottle. Now on the rare occasion he does wake, I can just turn the music back on and he settles himself again.

No ideas sorry, mine are 4 and 2 and both get up sometime between 5.45-6 every morning. What age do they start to want a lie in

NotQuiteCockney · 09/06/2007 08:08

All you have to do, is arrange to be somewhere very early in the morning. If you have an appointment somewhere at 8:30, I can guarantee he'll sleep in until at least then.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 09/06/2007 08:10

DD has started getting up really early too. In her case is because she does her daily poo at that time

Not much I can offer in the way of help really, just sympathising

NormaStanleyFletcher · 09/06/2007 08:11

agree with nqc - the one day recently that she slept until 8.15 was a day I was at work (we both overslept!)

Nbg · 09/06/2007 08:11

lol NQC and Norma

thanks nbg. will go in desperate search for plinky plonky music asap.

Nbg · 09/06/2007 08:15

I'll have a search for you and see if I can find it.
Mines a copy of the original so I dont have any more details unfortunatley.

that would be great nbg

MY DS (6 mths) went through a phase of waking at 5.30 am, but touch wood, we seem to have sorted it.

I was trying to cut his daytime sleep to make him sleep more at night but the net result was that he was so tired in the evening, he was ready for bed by about 6.30 pm, hence the early waking. I've found that a short nap - 15-30 mins - at about 5 pm means he can stay up until about 7.30 pm, and now he's waking sometime between 6.15 and 7 am - Hurray!!! In fact this week we had to wake him at 7 twice so we weren't late for work!!!

My DS seems to sleep a maximum of 11 hours a night, so making bed time later seems to shave shifted things along a bit to a more civilised time in the morning.

I also made sure his room was really dark - at the moment I hang blankets over the curtains - not very pretty but it does the trick and I WILL start looking for a more permanent solution soon!!

Good luck

Nbg · 10/06/2007 18:43

Ok Tamadin, I ahve spoke to my friends mum and shes had a look at the cd and its called

"Crystal music box with dream 4"!

Rather bizarre title lol.
I've done a search on amazon with no luck but there must be someone somewhere that has it!

I would put him to bed at 6pm and see what happens

if he still wakes at 5am at least you've had an hour off in the evening

Nbg · 10/06/2007 18:48

Ooooh yeah, that extra hour would be heavenly.

I put dd3 to bed at 6pm (she is 13 months though)

she is crap at sleeping in the day and if she has ANY SLEEP AT ALL eg 20 mins in the car she will NOT go in her cot for a nap, so by 6pm she is dropping.

she wakes anywhere between 6 and 6.30 which I can live with
