What to do about toddler who will not sleep but chokes/wheezes from crying?

We have a chesty/croupy 2 year old who has back to back coughs and colds which go straight to his chest. He is constantly wheezing. He seems to be asthmatic but that cannot be diagnosed until he is 5 (according to GP) and we keep being told to give him cold air. GP’s advice was to “take him outside if he has a breathing problem.”

He is keeping the whole house awake every night with typical toddler sleep issues. He works himself up crying if we do not bring him into bed with us or to let him play downstairs with his toys in the middle of the night, to the point that he is choking and retching and unable to breathe if we don’t let him do what he wants.

We are then forced to do what he wants and comply to his demands because the alternative is him having what appears to be an asthma attack.

Is there a solution to this?

Well apart from complain about your GP and ask for a second opinion?

My 3 year old son has wheezes and coughs when he has a cold - GP reinforced the "no diagnosis of asthma" till 5 but he was still given an inhaler and breathing space to prevent the issue. I would ask to see a different GP.

Sorry spacer not breathing space- to help them use inhaler while they are little

Ask for a referral to paediatrician.
Is there anything that helps with sleeping better or is it just when he has a cold?
