9 month old started waking up every 2 hours

Hi!
My 9 month has started to wake up frequently during the night, she used to sleep for at least 3-4 hours at a time but now she always seems so unsettled.
She has been slightly out of character lately being unsettled and a lot of runny poo, I did change her milk to stage 2 cow and gate follow on, she was originally on neocate due to being Prem and having NEC at young age but now she's fully developed and on solids I felt like she needed more substantial milk, plus she was going through 15 ounces of milk just overnight!
I know that by this age her sleep cycles change and they find it more difficult to self settle. My mum is convinced that if i bundle her up and wedge her in then she will feel safe but I'm worried that if she can't turn over she will get frustrated and wake up anyway. She is teething but there's nothing actually breaking through gums so I don't think this is the cause.
I'm finding it really difficult with this much disturbed sleep so any advice would be helpful.

How long has it been for? It could well be teething - runny poo, generally miserable etc have you tried calpol? If it's teething this will help sooth the pain - mine used to be like this then suddenly a tooth (or teeth) would appear overnight!

Hi my 8 month old was sleeping through the night for a couple of weeks and has now started waking up every 10 minutes throughout the whole night I’ve tried everything to prevent it like extra feeds, less naps in the day, bath and baby massage before bed I’m just so tired I don’t no what else to do I feel stuck

mrscloppity · 12/09/2018 12:38

Mine too! He's gone from waking once to about 5 or 6 times and taking ages to settle 😩

Hello, my girl is on Neocate for Cows Milk Protein Allergy, if I was to give her cow and gate she would get the symptoms you are describing. I would say to try going back onto Neocate (or other dairy free milk) and your baby will be back to normal! Smile

Hi! It's been going on for past three days, I have tried calpol which does work but I hate giving it to her too much.
She was only on neocate for nec when she was very prem as I couldn't provide breastmilk, I don't think she's lactose intolerant as I've gave her cows milk before and she's been fine.
I'm hoping it's teething and it will pass soon, she's staying with my sister tonight so I can sleep!

Follow on milk is a total con, invented by formula companies to allow them to advertise. Stage one infant formula is absolutely fine until they are one and you can move onto cow's/ other milk (although if she's had NEC (assuming you mean Necrotising enterocolitis?), that implies gut damage so perhaps she can't tolerate cows milk after all). It is also totally normal for babies to need to feed over night, even seemingly large amounts. And stage 2 is no more 'substantial', whatever you mean by that....

BUT: there is a HUGE sleep regression at 8-10 mo. And teething does get to them. It's not too much if you're following the advice and it solves the problem.

Oh and only 3 nights of it? Erm, right.....

sobloodyitchy · 12/09/2018 21:25

@arbrighton any need whatsoever in the snarky unhelpful attitude? Hmm

make yourself a food diary. around this age babies are so active they are starting to need more solids. they need minimum of 500ml of formula and by 8 months 3 meals a day and 2 snacks and possibly supper. offer drinks of water from a free flow cup after food but not during meals. if she is drinking formula in the night increase the day time solids as if it is habit babies only take a couple of ounces. if it is hunger they drink the full bottle.

My ten month old granddaughter ( who lives with us ) has gone from sleeping through ( 8-7 most nights ) to waking at approx 2 am crying uncontrollably .. has a feed ( 5oz ) sometimes will go back off but then more often than not wakes again an hour later .. I have made the mistake this morning of bringing g her in with me as mum grandad and myself needed some sleep .. any advice please ( I know the co sleeping was a bad idea but we needed some sleep !! 🙄)
Has it just developed into a habit ? ( the 2 am feed ) if so how do we break it ? I’m a 53 yr old mum of two so feel as if I ought to know but I don’t ! Any help please would be appreciated

Max14165 · 13/09/2018 02:57

Meant to say .. she has 3 x 7oz bottles during the day .. 3 meals plus snacks .. where are we going wrong ? Xx

Brenda58 · 13/09/2018 08:05

signs that babies are waking because they may be hungry are they are restless in their cot. if you put them in bed with you they may go to sleep but are still restless, if you put them in their highchair in the day without food they are unsettled. if they wake before midnight and if the wakings in the night are at random times. if they are drinking several ounces at a time in the night. if any of these apply increase the solids in the day if they are over 6 months. prepare food before putting baby in the highchair. don't offer drinks with meals only after so they don't fill up n water. this does not apply to a baby under 6 months.

Hi! Thankyou @sobloodyitchy Smile
First of all @arbrighton Your opinion on cow and gate is irrelevant. I did mean necrotising enterocolitis thought that was quite obvious and she recovered within a week and since the doctors said there is no lasting damage it was just because I was unable to give her breastmilk after a week and the formula they provided was too much.
Oh my mistake I assumed a baby didn't need anything overnight Hmm
Of course it is but a baby this age would only need 1-2 bottles overnight a bottle every two hours and neocate is very soft of gut that's what I meant by substantial, she may need to fill more full before bed thus she was waking up a lot but thankyou for all the unhelpful advice!

I do give my dd food every breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks here and there but I will try the food diary as this might come in helpful Smile

Bad habits are so easy to develop especially when your sleep deprived. I would just keep persistently with cot, try staying in the room her once she's in cot at night for periods of time so she doesn't feel alone. You could try putting something that smells of you next to her so if she stirs in the night she feels like your still present. It may take patience but just keep putting baby back to bed and eventually he will get bored and understand no matter what happens she ends up back in cot so there's no point keep crying. It may be hard but worth it in the end, self settling is important Smile good luck!

a good nights sleep is like a jigsaw puzzle.the basics need to be in place. baby needs to be well, have a full tummy, be able to fall asleep in the cot on their own at night. in the day without cuddles or movement, not be too hot or too cold. have appropriate night wear. if they go back to sleep with a full bottle look at hunger. if they go back to sleep with a cuddle and they stay asleep for around 2 hours look at habit. this doesn't guarantee a nights sleep but there is likely to be some improvement.
