3-2 naps and bringing bedtime forward

I'm happy to bring bedtime forward from 7-6 to ensure DS doesn't have more than 3-3.5 h from afternoon nap until bedtime

But.... At what point are we going to be able to move bedtime back again? Will he gradually be able to stay awake for longer? I also worry on days where he wakes at say 2, I have the choice of a either ridiculously early bedtime that day or a third nap which makes bedtime really late (not desirable, he's always gone to sleep at 7)

What did you do??

How old is your DS?

9 months. Only dropping a nap as he's started doing it himself, I've never followed routines or even knew about transition until I discussed with a friend!

My DS is 10mo and he varies between 2 and 3 naps, though two work best for him to be ready to sleep at night. I'm confused though- does your DS nap for 3-3.5hrs in his afternoon nap? That's a long time if so!
Even if DS naps 3 tones or 2 I usually stick to bedtime at 7 though he's only just coming out of the other side of the regression so it's all still up in the air

My DS started dropping his 3rd nap at 7 months. When on 3 naps he went to bed at 7. Bed time stayed the same for us because he went for both his naps later. So he was up about 7, First nap about 10-11 and then second nap about 2/2.30-3.30/4. Even on days if for whatever reason he hadn’t napped like this ( if we were out) and was awake from 2 he was totally fine and stayed up till 7 normally. I was surprised because I thought it would be meltdowns but it never was.

At 9 months, quite a few (and, probably, most) babies do well with a longer stretch of awake time between the end of the second nap and bedtime. One of possible patterns is a so called "2-3-4 routine" where the awake time between naps/bedtime follows a ladder structure. (2-3-4 are timings between naps/bed).

DD easily dropped her third nap when she was 6.5 months. We temporarily brought the bedtime forward by 15-20 minutes for 2-3 weeks but it went back to 7pm after that.

At 9 months we were doing something like:

6.30-7am - wake up
Nap 1 - 30 minutes between 9am and 10am
Nap 2 - 2.5 hours (12.30 - 3pm)
7pm - bed

Thanks all, sounds similar to what I was thinking

Gimble- to clarify I meant 2-3.5h between end of nap and bed. I can only dream of such long naps Grin

Haha I thought that was what you meant. Imagine a 3 hour nap.. the things I would get done Shock the best my boy does is 1 hr 15 which is a massive improvement because until recently he's only do 40 mins or less!

For the last few days (since he got over the regression) he's done

7pm-4:30am sleep then feed and back to sleep until 7am

Next nap at 10am until 11:15ish

Next nap at 3:15pm until maybe 4:15pm then bed at 7.

Trying to give him dinner at 5 so he has time to wear himself out before bed as recently he's been fighting bedtime so much!

My DS has transitioned to the 2-3-4 routine by himself. It took some early nights/late nights but I'm not a big routine person so I didn't mind.

Bananarama12 · 14/08/2018 12:22

He's 10 months
