The only way we've found of getting DS3 to settle on his own is by putting him down slightly on his side, if we put him on his back he either a) wakes up straight away or b) only sleeps for about 5 minutes. On his side he sleeps really quite well (for a newborn ).

I know the advice is flat on back because of the risk of SIDS but is it really terrible of us to prop him on his side??

I'm no professional fanny, but i think as long as he's not on his front it should be ok....See if anyone with better info answers but surely you've found a comfy position for him and you're all better off for that

My sister's first was born in Thailand & her friend gave her some stuffed cloth rolls which are traditionally used to prop babies on their sides to sleep. Sis used them for both her DCs & then passed them on to me & I used them too. (Though in fact, we were actually using them so the babies wouldn't roll on to their backs, as at that time we were told they would choke if they slept on thier backs....

We had to do the same thing - they did it in the hospital too.

I did it too fannieannie ... with both my two.
DS is 7 and DD is 3.

I am doing this too with DS - he is still mucousy and tends to choke on milk on his back. I use a rolled up blanket to prop him in his moses basket.

He is getting better now (mucous clearing), and will lie flat at night.

gecko is now 4 months and rolls onto her side tp sleep herself but i was proppinh her on her side from a couple of weeks

Both my dss slept on their side for the first 3-4 weeks. As they gradually unfurled it became less of an issue and they both switched to sleeping on their backs.
Both sets of hvs commented on it and "hoped" I remembered what was safest - I smiled sweetly and carried on.
Was an issue with ds1 when we were stuck in the hospital (3 looong days) - they kept coming in to our room and turning him without a word to me! Ds1'd then wake and scream the house down 'til plonked on his side again. Then they'd come in and turn him again (was not amused!). Was one of the reasons I was desperate to get out of there.

I did this too with both dds, dd1 had terrible wind and would wake after 5 mins if put down on her back and was usually sick.

I used a rolled up towel in the crib, as the wind/ sick got better, (about 16 weeks) she slept on her back no probs.
Congrats on ds3!

I did this too used to roll up a cloth and put it at back to prop them up. Just make sure you try to alternate sides you put him down to sleep, if you dont it can cause a mishapen skull as growth will be uneven.

DS (9mo old) only slept on his back for the first 3 weeks, after that he wouldn't sleep unless he was on his side, i used to roll a blanket up and put it behind his back so he wasn't right up against the edge of the Moses baset/cotbed.

Even now he insists on being put down on his side and will then at some point roll onto his belly and sleep that way (bum in the air of course, lol)

He loathes sleeping on his back.
