How on earth do you keep children cool at night?

Ds1 is just 3, he's got a cough so I've just been in to him, his hair is wet with sweat, and his sheet is damp. He's wearing very light shorts and t shirt pjs. He has a groblind up which of course blocks any breeze from his window. I tend to leave bedrooms door pushed closed, to contain any noise (so he and ds2 don't wake each other). I've Checked his temp and it's fine but just wondering what I can do to keep him cool? Or less hot at least?

We have DDs bedroom door open tonight to allow a draft through from Windows open in other rooms. No blanket, just in knickers for bed tonight.

Have also given her a hot water bottle filled with cold water just to get her to sleep.

I let mine sleep naked, especially if you have the blind shut

Sparklehead · 24/07/2018 23:14

My 3 sleep naked, windows are open, but curtains shut, and they just have a sheet to sleep under, if they want it (none of them do tonight). They are finding it hard to get to sleep, so this evening I patted them down with a cold, damp face cloth and then lay it spread out on their tummies - this worked surprisingly well and they got off to sleep a little more quickly than previous nights.

My DC have all been sleeping in pants only, with an empty duvet cover, bedroom windows and doors open to allow a breeze, and curtains open a bit too.

Sparrowlegs248 · 24/07/2018 23:18

Thanks. He's not got any covers on at all. His bedroom is really big but it's still really warm. He went off to sleep ok but is very disturbed with the heat I think. Cold water bottle is a great idea!

DD (almost 2) is sleeping in just a nappy with no sheet. Only one small window open in her room which is blocked by the blind but door open and our bedroom door and windows open for breeze.

No other DC though and she sleeps through most noise.

Sparrowlegs248 · 24/07/2018 23:26

He's actually coughing an awful lot which isn't helping him cool down.

Freezer clamps in the bed, inside a pillow case. Reverse hot water bottle like.

minipie · 24/07/2018 23:31

I go and open their doors and windows and blinds after they're asleep then reclose before I go to bed.

I like the cold water bottle/ freezer block idea

RoseMartha · 24/07/2018 23:40

I gave kids a cold flannel on their foreheads

crayoladreamz · 24/07/2018 23:51

Mine sleep naked with just a sheet.

SleightOfMind · 24/07/2018 23:56

We’re on holiday in a great place with sweat box rooms.
I’ve filled a spray atomiser with water and sort of misted the DC & their sheets.

It’s worked brilliantly, especially as I’m a bit worried about leaving windows open in an unfamiliar place.

Sparrowlegs248 · 25/07/2018 04:50

minipie I did that in the end, unclipprd the blind at the top so the open so wow had a bit of an effect. Just been in and closed it . I might have to get a fan for his room I think.

I find keeping the curtains shut in the daytime helps stop the room getting quite as hot. Then windows wide open in the evening until I go to bed.

SisterMortificado · 25/07/2018 05:46

Over here (Australia) it's open window, sleep in knickers, tie DD's hair into a bun on top of her head, and just have a sheet, if she wants it.
Fan at the end of the bed, and yes, on very hot nights when it's still 30+, a flannel from the freezer on her tummy. Water bottle on the bedside table, I usually encourage her to take a few mouthfuls on my way to bed.

Summer is a pain even when your house is designed to stay cool, so I really feel for everyone in a house designed to stay warm.

Joboy · 25/07/2018 05:53

Gel type pads . Are good as they are like a damp rag but no water .

I bought this ice towel thing from amazon for about £10. You wet it and shake it and it stays cool to touch for about two hours. I just lay it over me when I feel too hot.

bumblingbovine49 · 25/07/2018 06:54

Why no fan?. We have 5 in our house. One in each bedroom, one in the front living room and one in the kitchen diner

The have been permanently there since the end of msy. I switch the bedroom ones on an hour before bed which helps. You do need to have the window open though othereise it just moved hot air around.

It is still hot but without the fan, I wouldn't be able to sleep.

wherethewildthingis · 25/07/2018 06:59

Please don't leave windows open unless you have safety devices to prevent them being opened more than a couple of inches. Sounds obvious but I think we all get a bit complacent in this heat.

Sparrowlegs248 · 25/07/2018 23:25

I do leave the windows open as both dc are in cots, and ds1 only has a top opening window. We do have 1 fan which I've had in mine and the babies room as our room is hotter , with the sun being on it all afternoon and evening. This is the first time since I was pregnant that I've felt the need to use it to be honest .
