rolling around all night and needing rescuing

This is probably a really stupid question and probably has a really obvious answer but am completely sleep deprived. DS who is 7 MO has been really good at sleeping, except he still needed his 4am feed which we've eliminated in recent weeks. Now though, he's discovered rolling around the cot, often from 2am thru to 5/5.30 getting stuck with face in bars, wedged into corners etc. He's in a grobag. I've tried everything bar sewing him to the mattress Heyulp. We now wish we'd never got rid of the 4am feed getting up once in the night with guaranteed result was simple compared to this.....

roll up some big towels, even sellotape them to stop them unravelling, and wedge them down each side of ds

i was going to suggest this but obviously he is too big

this also but its quite expensive

have you tried cot bumpers? or are they not allowed any more. i had one

dcb · 30/05/2007 09:21

we had this and tried all sorts - towels rolled up, tucking grobag in at the end of cot etc. some of it helped but she would still get stuck - started at a later age with our dd though. it does get better as they learn to move around for themselves, i promise. may have happened anyway even without dropping the feed - i was still feeding dd at this point.

remember - it will get better

aww thank you for replies - will definitely try the towel trick...we didn't have a bumper cos he was swaddled for ages (bliss for him, bliss for us) but good plan - might try that as well....thanks so much

You could also try putting the rolled up towels under the bottom sheet to keep them in place. We are doing this tonight to try and solve the moving around that has had DD up at 4AM the last few nights.

Fingers crossed it works for us both!

I agree about a bumper. My friend recommended weaving it between the cot bars so DS was less likely to pull it down on himself/get stuck behind it etc. which could be dangerous. I wove it inside 3 bars, then outside 1 bar all the way round. I hope that makes sense. It meant that DS got stuck & banged his head much less.

We tried all the usual tricks, as already mentioned, e.g. tucking Grobag under end of mattress, but nothing helped until he was big enough to be able to move himself out of trouble.

I seem to recall that the next stage was standing up then not being able to lie back down by himself (yes, some babies can stand up in a Grobag!). Rest assured, it is a phase! DS sleeps 'like a baby' now!

ditto here!

thank you, will definitely try the weaving of bumper and also putting the towels under the sheet. If nothing else the idea of him standing in grobag unable to get back down has had me in stitches so you've cheered me up massively aww, aren't they fabulous?

Meant to say, good luck and fingers crossed Daffodilly

Well to report back it seems to help with the turning around in the cot. Though she does try to sort of 'mount' the towels!

However, last night she awoke anyway as she has a bit of a cold. They certainly keep you on your toes!

sorryihaventaclue · 02/06/2007 10:39

nothing's working! awake between 1.15 and 5.30 - then we gave up and got up. Look like I've been clubbing for 12 months. Obviously he's having a lovely long kip now...Don't know what to do!
