Hello, i'm due in 7 weeks with my first baby & have been looking at all the various options for baby to sleep in initially. Just wondered what everyones thoughts were on moses baskets v fixed cribs v bedside cribs? Thanks guys :)

DS is 4 weeks old & already in a fixed cot (beside me). He was 9lbs 6oz at birth so the moses basket was a bit snug...at 11lbs 11oz he now hates the damned thing & wakes himself up if he touches the sides 🙈 i would say don't spend too much money on the smaller things like cribs or moses just in case. I wish i'd got a bedside cot tbh as would be a lot easier than sticking my hand through the bars to comfort DS, but we had to plan ahead with a cot bed due to space

I did a Moses basket. If we’d had space I would have gone straight to the big cot.

Both my first two hated the Moses basket so for my third I’m having a baby box for downstairs sleeping. Upstairs we have a bedside crib - found it easier for night feeds

My advice is to research safe bed-sharing too, whatever your intentions are now. Many mothers don't do this, yet find that it's the easiest way for everyone to get a good night's sleep, particularly if you're breastfeeding.

Much better to know in advance how to do it safely than end up bringing baby in with you out of desperation and do it unsafely Smile

Basically aside from rules about parents re: no alcohol/smoking/drugs, avoid duvets above your waist, keep pillows away from the baby who should be about level with your boobs (i.e. in the crook of your arm), and have them only on a flat surface (i.e. directly on the mattress), with no gaps at side of bed they could fall into. A rolled up towel under the bedsheet is a vastly cheaper option than the snuggle pod things.

I tried pretty much everything (Moses, sleepy head, crib, co sleeping, next to me). Dd is 12 weeks. I’d say buy something inexpensive and see how baby is before investing as there is no telling where baby will sleep!

Dc1 slept in his carrycot as he hated his crib and eventually moved into a sleepyhead after I weaned him off of napping in my arms.

Dc2 is 8 weeks and has insisted on co sleeping since birth which dc1 didn't do. I just got a poddle pod for day naps which he seems to like. I'm awaiting a sleepyhead to try and get him into his cot for the night as I hate co sleeping. I'm exhausted as I can't sleep deeply and I have to lay in a very uncomfortable position.

I agree with InFrance. We bought a cotbed for DS’s nursery, have a next to me crib attached to the bed in our room and have a Moses basket downstairs. Apart from a few occasions when he was tiny, he never slept in the Moses basket and now at 3 and a half months is only just happy to go in his next to me (as long as we can get him in there without waking him up) for about half the night. Other than that, he naps on our bed during the day and we bed share at night. In my head, my baby would never need to bed share because it would go into its next to me crib without a fuss. That was not the reality. As others have said, don’t spend loads and maybe see how your baby does first!

We bought a cot bed for daughters nursery which she'll go in when she's 6 months. In our bedroom we have a next to me cot from Smyths with a Purflo breathable nest which she loves! In the living room we have a moses basket for napping throughout the day, daughter is 3 weeks and has nearly outgrown it though.

My baby is almost 10 weeks. We have Moses basket, baby box and cotbed. At the beginning she slept in the baby box in our bedroom and then at 2 weeks she was mowed to Moses basket and sleeps in it every night. During the day she sleeps in her cot. Now shes getting big and we will have to move her to her cot in her room as theres no space in our bedroom

ReverseSquiggly · 26/07/2018 19:37

We had a Moses basket at first which we carted up and downstairs for day and night!

Then she moved to a tutti bambini cozee bedside cot but we didn’t use it attached to the bed. I always thought we would but I didn’t like it - I never fed lying down so wasn’t worth it. I didn’t like how I couldn’t get out my side of the bed without scooting down to the end where the cot wasn’t attached and I was always scared my duvet would end up on top of her!
