Hi everyone :)

My little one is 17 months, nearly 18 months. He has always been a pretty good sleeper in general. He has gone down to one nap a day in the last couple of months (I think he would have stayed on 2 forever 😆) and he’s adapted pretty well, still can get tired and whinges about 11ish some mornings but he is getting there. He also sometimes messes about for about 20 mins before going to sleep, but ‘usually’ will sleep. He normally does 12.45-2.45 but it varies and sometimes is 1.15-2.45, I usually have to wake him as any closer to 3 he would not settle at bedtime. So anyway onto the issue, the last 2 weeks or so he has been waking at 4am, crying, sometimes he will re settle himself and sleep till 7 but more recently we have to go in to settle him, and usually he won’t let us put him down, we have to either lay with him or put our hand on his back, it takes upwards of an hour to get him back to sleep- then he generally sleeps till 6.30-7. This morning he woke at 4am resettled but woke at 5am and 6am upset. I know it doesn’t sound too bad but it’s becoming so regular I’m worried I’m doing something wrong in the day. Is it a sleep regression sign? Or do you Think he is waking when the sun comes up? It’s quite dark in there he has a blackout blind but light still can creep through. Any advice or similar stories welcome :)

Just an update he woke at 2am and 5am this morning, he cried for about 5 minutes and then settled, we would have gone in if he sounded really distressed. Any advice is much appreciated

Morning! If the early waking time is pretty consistent at 4 am, you could try ever so gently rousing whilst shushing and patting him about 15 mins before that time. The aim is that he then tips over into another sleep cycle before properly waking up. It’ll feel risky though but may be worth a try as it does seem to work for lots who’ve tried it.
At that time of day too, the sleepy hormone melatonin is reducing and the daylight will increase the cortisol waking up hormone so it’s so tricky. Yes any attempts to keep the room as dark as possible are worth a shot. Good luck Smile

Isn't it just because of the current heat?

Ah thank you swizzles, I will give it a go if it continues! :)

Hi Wolfy- yes it may just be the weather and heat, I was just panicking a bit in case it becomes the new norm!
