5 month old sleep issues, any advice please?

I posted on parenting but looking for more advice if possible!

My 5 month old DS has a few sleep issues I think its time to address now he's cut his bottom two teeth (hoping the next ones wait a while!) and we've got through the 4 month sleep regression.

During the day he will wake up at 6-6.30 and then go down for his first nap around 8am, he sleeps for at least 2 hours usually if not disturbed (postman! Hmm) - is this too long for a morning nap?

He takes another nap at midday for around an hour and another one in the afternoon at about 3 for another hour occasionally longer. So 3 naps a day.

Bed time is 6.30pm, we tried 7.30 originally but he just gets too tired so then we tried 7, but ended up doing 6.30. He has a bottle, book and a cuddle with mummy and daddy and then we take him in his room and walk around with him until he goes to sleep (he likes motion to drift off) - this part is the easy bit.

Laying him down in his cot is near impossible he wakes up every time, starts flailing his arms and legs or talking, or pulls his dummy out and you have to start the holding, walking routine all over again. We have to attempt to lay him down 10-20 times before we're successful on average.

He has white noise, a fan on, a light muslin around him, sleepyhead in cot, raised cot head end, dark room with blackout blinds.

Ususally he will wake 2-3 times a night and need re-settling in the same way as above - walking, holding. He usually wakes up for the day at around 6-6.30 but occasionally this has been 5 lately Sad

I'm really not sure what to do to get him to lay in his cot. Its the constant picking up and holding him thats really a pain. Someone suggested controlled crying, but 5 months is too young - isn't it?

Any tips / advice very much welcome, at my wits end a bit!
