Is it ok to keep using Medised?

DD is 6 months old. Until recently, she was a good sleeper. Over the last couple of weeks, she has become very restless at nights, often waking and requiring rocking to get her back to sleep. She has just cut her first tooth, so I am guessing that this may be part of the problem She also seems constantly sniffly and blocked up. For the last few nights, I have given her a dose of Medised just before bedtime, hoping to alleviate any discomfort she is having, and to help her sleep better. However, I am worried that I should not be using this frequently. Is this ok? Is there anything else I should use? Grateful for any advice. Thanks

i think it should be ok its possibly just the teething. i use ashton and parsons teething powders for my dd who is nearly finished teething you can use that with teething gel and medicine, i have used medised for a solid week whilst dd cutting teeth good luck

MamaG · 24/05/2007 14:39

I don't think you should get into th habit of using medisel tbh

Kewcumber · 24/05/2007 14:44

I don't think I would give for more than a week solidly but have only given for colds when congested so haven't really had to as they've cleared up within a week.

if she is still blocked up then try elevating the head of the cot, using some olbas oil and a karvol plug in. I don't think you should use Medised for more than a few nights on the run.

oh gawd, i use medised a lot, tbh. whenever she's got a cold she gets a teaspoon at bedtime, same if her teething pain is bad. it's probably wrong but i don't like her in pain and found the teethign powders a bit useless at night time.

lol at the idea of elevating one end of the bed in my case - DS rotates in his sleep and quite often ends up pointing the opposite way!

I always worry about this! If I have been using medised or paracetemol for around a week I tend to take DD to |GP's just to check it isn't anything serious (once it was a chest infection, so am a bit paranoid now!) and I always ask if it's ok to carry on dosing. My lovely GP said something that stuck with me

'If you have a headache or bad cold you would take paracetemol every day until it goes so you could sleep, so why should you make your child suffer?'

Have you tried Anbesol teething liquid(over the counter in chemists)? It worked wonders for DD@s gums as it has lidocaine in it so numbs her while she is getting to sleep.

Kewcumber, the one night I elevated DD's bed she was scrunched up, upside down, at the lower end! She did NOT look comfy!

I think the "what would you do if it was you approach" is sensible in most cases, I wouldn't expect to be medicating myself for more than a week with a cold but wouldn't think anything of taking a nurofen once a week.

We obviously have similar DC's Chirpy, I tried to give ihm his first pillow last week but he wrestled it around the cot like a giant teddy until I gave in and took it away!

This is going to sound terrible but i gave my dd2 medised for about 3 months she was a really bad sleeper, she would wake 4 or 5 times a night, she was 9lb born and was hungry baby milk from 2 weeks but nothing seemed to fill her up she would feed every 2 hours day and night, she only started sleeping properly at about 8months, unless she was on medised. at least we caught up on sleep, my gp and hv knew all about the medised. Although it never worked on my ds, he was on nureofen (spelling) and calpol.

jorange5 · 25/05/2007 13:22

I must admit to using medised when the babe had a bad cold but only for 2 nights because it contains this lot:

Marogol 4000, Sodium Cyclamate, Glycerol, Propylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Maltitol Solution, Saccharin Sodium, Parabens (E214, E216 & E218), Strawberry Flavour (E300), Sugar Module (E210 & E1518) and water.

Sodium Cyclamate is banned in the US due to cancer risks and some studies link Parabens to breast cancer. The other ingredients aren't exactly enticing either are they!

Yukky yukky yukky!

kittypants · 25/05/2007 13:27

does medised help them sleep?
for colds etc we put couple of teaspoons of vicks in bowl of boiling water(where dc cant get it) it works amazingly well.for teething i use ashtons and parsons teething powder.

Lots of babies are bad sleepers, Notdoneyet. I am shocked that both your GP and HV knew you were giving Medised for three months, and didn't explain to you its dangerous. Its a painkilling medicine not something to make them sleep.
