Are bunk beds safe for a 4 and 3 year old

My eldest will be 5 in a few months and my youngest is 3 and a half .

We live in a 2 bed house and the kids room is very small , they currently have 2 toddler sized beds and there isn't much floor space because the beds can only be put in a certain position due to built in wardrobes ...
However a small bunk bed would fit, I'm just wondering would the bunk bed be safe for my eldest sleeping at the top ? .

I could get two 2ft 6 single beds , but they would take up more floor space .

No

No

The minimum age for any raised bed (bunk bed, high sleeper or mid sleeper) is 6 years old.

I think it depends on the child... if they’re a boisterous whirlwind then maybe not but if you think you can trust them then I don’t see why not

IlikemyTeahot · 10/06/2018 21:49

what about a double futon?

OldHag1 · 10/06/2018 21:50

No. They have a label stating suitable age, 6 I think.

We've got bunk beds. Idea was dd1 would move up to the top bunk when she wanted. She's way too scared to sleep up there, she's tried a couple of times but always comes down. I've slept up there and it's really very high, I was convinced that I was going to fall out! You can get a mid sleeper and then put another bed in a L shape, that might work better?

BillywigSting · 10/06/2018 21:52

Absolutely not no. (I regularly fell out of mine until I was around 10 and got one when I turned 7)

Monkeymonstermum · 10/06/2018 21:54

I think it totally depends on the child. We did it at 4.5 and nearly 3 but went for one of the mid sleeper and the bottom bunk on the floor type. I researched and apparently most accidents happen in day time hours - ie excited children jumping/falling when playing. Mine are not overly boisterous and they don’t play alone in their bedroom often at all. Neary 2 years on and they are fine.

Kraggle · 10/06/2018 21:54

Dd has been in a midsleeper since she was 4.5 years and has had no problems.

Monkeymonstermum · 10/06/2018 21:56

Billy: did your bunk have a side rail?

hugoagogo · 10/06/2018 22:03

Not really. What about one of those beds where one slides under the other? like this then you would have more floor space during the day...

BillywigSting · 10/06/2018 22:06

monkey yes, quite a high one too.

I moved to the bottom bunk quite quickly and then regularly gave myself mild concussion waking up and forgetting there was a bed right above me and whacking my head instead.

Theknitwitch · 10/06/2018 22:08

No. Minimum age is 6. Wouldn’t risk it. Opted for mid sleeper instead.

Lollipop30 · 10/06/2018 22:10

Wow never heard of the age limit before. Mine have been on bunk beds for a year now, they were 4 and 1 when we got them! They’ve just turned 2&5 and still works fab, I’d recommend it but you know your kids

Liesmyparentstoldme · 10/06/2018 22:11

I'd say it depends on the child. I have two dds 4 and 3. They've had bunk beds for 6 months, there's been no problems or accidents.

Dermymc · 10/06/2018 22:17

Of course they are for a sensible child and a rail along them.

I had them with my sister from approx 4

lostleonardo · 10/06/2018 22:23

Our almost 5 year old twins have had them for about 4 months. They are great in them & very sensible.

Clairetree1 · 10/06/2018 22:27

no

I think the minimum age is 8

But you can buy the bunkbeds now and have them sleep together in the lower bunk for a while?

Friolero · 10/06/2018 22:28

I think it depends on the type of bunk bed and the children.

My younger two DCs have bunk beds, and my now 5yo has been on the top bunk for about a year. The bunk beds have a staircase rather than a ladder though, so are very easy for him to get up and down. My 8yo has a high sleeper with a ladder and I wouldn't be happy with the younger two climbing that at night yet.

Earslaps · 10/06/2018 22:35

What about an Ikea Kura mid sleeper and a mattress on the bottom? A bit less high than your average bunk bed. Technically says six as a minimum age but might be ok for a 5yo, if you pop the tent on top they are less likely to fall out.

TheBrilloPad · 10/06/2018 23:22

My 2&3 year old have had these sort of bunk-beds for a few months with no problems. The steps are like stairs and not ladders so easy for them to climb with no falling out. No issues at all so far, we all love them.
