5 month old waking every 45mins

Says it all really!

Happily I don't have much of a problem getting my EBF 5 month old DD to sleep, but she will wake up at every cycle, sometimes more and occasionally less. Usually settles back easily with a dummy, until about 10/11 when she gets more unsettled so I feed her and bring her into bed with me. Once I'm in the bedroom with her she won't settle without a feed or dummy so she stays in bed with me until morning, as transferring her to the sidecar cot tends to rouse her. She might do a couple of 2 hour stretches but I find bedsharing super uncomfortable!

Always wakes after 45mins during the day too, even in the buggy/sling/car. What can I do to help her learn to join her cycles up?

So tired as my 3.5yo DS gets up at 6 if I'm lucky (but that's another story!)

Should've mentioned it was worse a few weeks ago with the dreaded 4 month regression, when she would only sleep in my arms. So it has got better gradually since then. Not sure if I should just ride it out or if there's anything I can do to help her join up her sleep.

White noise helped me. Put it on all night. I use the phone app "sound sleeper" the rain or fan settings.

Sorry no advice but im in the same boat so know how you feel, im wondering if solids once weaned might help my dd sleep longer at night as im exhausted too.

Newmomma2018 · 10/06/2018 06:50

Im in a similar situation here. DS will only nap for 20-30 minutes x3 per day and wakes at 4:30-5am each morning and twice through the night. We too have just got past the sleep regression (or thought we had). Maybe its an extension of that? Im hoping it ends soon. At least your not in that boat alone. Sorry I havent got any advice x

Thanks all! It is tough isn't it because as they get older everyone around you presumes that you're getting a lot more sleep than you are.

Thingyma, I do play the white noise for naps and bedtime, and generally during the evening. It helps cover up the noise of her brother banging and clanging about but it doesn't seem to make any difference to the cycle wake ups unfortunately.

I forgot to mention that my son regressed to waking every 2 hours at night at around 3.5-4 months. That part did pass by itself in around 2-3 weeks (though it felt like a lot longer). Maybe yours will get better by itself. I did find going to bed at night when he did (7pm) helpful. Do you have anyone to help you so that you could try that? It literally saved mg sanity (which was hanging by a thin thread lol)

I'm going to bed early too!

MontyB · 10/06/2018 21:22

My 6 month old was just the same with short naps of 30 mins and waking up loads in the night, wanting feeding, needing rocking etc. Yes all the good routines help but something happened in his little brain when he hit 6 months and he gradually started to sleep better at night and then had the odd 1 hour nap out of the blue. I think it’s all developmental and when they are good and ready to do it. All the tricks in the book don’t seem to work until they are ready to do it themselves in my option.

MontyB · 10/06/2018 21:22

Opinion even!

GrandmistressGlitch · 10/06/2018 22:34

Thanks all!

Yes Monty I do think you're right. I feel like one day she'll start doing longer stretches of her own accord. And until then...

Newmomma I do have support from my DH most of the time, he has been working away up to 4 nights a week which has been a killer. When he's away I can't go to bed early as am sorting out the house and usually dealing with the 3yo too, he has a tendency to wander about.

I have massive respect for single mothers doing this on their own 24/7.
