7 month old waking at 5.30

Liloosmum · 20/05/2007 20:05

My 7.5 month old DD wakes at 5.30 nearly every morning, coo-ing quite happily for about half an hour and then crying to be fed. She used to go back to sleep again until 8ish, but now plays for about 15 minutes before crying and wanting to get up. We give her her last bottle at 7pm and put her to bed around half past. My DH is convinved that it is because she is hungry, but I am not because I think she would wake up crying if that is why she is waking.

She has just started having a longish (1-2 hour) sleep at 9 and then another sleep for 45-60 minutes around 2-3. She is usually really tired and crotchy from 6.30, but we make her wait until 7 when she frequently falls asleep during her last feed and we usually wake her up to put her to bed.

I am not sure if I should just accept that she will wake up at that time and it's unreasonable to expect her to be able to sleep longer, or if she would sleep longer if I changed/cut short her naps, especially the morning one. I know she already sleeps longer than a lot of babies her age, but my nephew sleeps every night from 7.30pm to 7.30-8am religiously !

Sorry for the long post, but I am new to this and wanted to make sure I put as much info as possible!

Any thoughts?

MaeBee · 12/06/2007 19:12

cruisemum1 · 13/06/2007 07:57

can you believe it...he woke three times last night

DaddyJ · 13/06/2007 09:32

I am starting to pine for the bad old 5:30am starts..
4am this morning

And there is not much I can do apart from giving her lots of cuddles.

Poor girl has got two teeth coming through, blocked nose,
nasty coughs and getting used to nursery/not having Mum at home 3 days a week
Resettled her 5ish and crept back into bed. Until 6:15am.

And on Friday we are taking her to London Zoo!
Are there any animals that would consider temporarily adopting a human child?
Just for a few months?

cruisemum1 · 13/06/2007 10:27

try the nocturnal ones first . Sorry to hear you are earlier than ever daddyj! Perhaps you could take a milk round

My son has always been an early riser altho he has had a few brief spells of sleeping a bit later - sometimes until 7 - whoopee! He's six now and regularly gets up at 5.30. But at least he can turn on the telly and get his own breakfast now. My 2 girls have both had phases of waking early and lots of my friends kids have been early riseres at the 6 months - 1 yr age but then they've started sleeping later. So take heart, just because they wake early when they're little doesn't necessarily mean you're doomed to a life of 5.30 starts. I've got used to getting up early now and try to go to bed early. You're buggered if you have a night out though...

meadow6 · 13/06/2007 13:47

All 3 of my kids woke early once they started "sleeping through." 5 o'clock was the norm. Then at about 13months it changed and they slept until 7 and unless unwell that never changed again. I had to just go with it as putting them to bed later didn't change anything. I must remember all this as I pace the house at 5a.m. in a foul mood with number 4 due in Jan!

MaeBee · 13/06/2007 19:06

well, my little one has already gone to bed. its so hot even wtih the rain, and ive been looking everywhere for a 1tog sl.bag but everywhere says they dont have them in yet!! its june!!! anyway, i just put him in pj's and put a blanket over him, but am i meant to dress him for what the temperature is NOW or what it is likely to drop too???
dont want him to wake up cold in the night.

Jojay · 13/06/2007 19:10

I got a really nice summer sleeping bag from Vertbaudet

kath81 · 14/06/2007 13:42

Can I join in?

DS is 17 months and wakes up between 5 and half past (altho has been really wicked in the past and gotten up at 4.30)

He goes to bed at half six- makes absolutley no difference if its later- and does sleep through until 5ish. But then he's knackared by 9.45 and sleeps for 2 hours- ok for some!

I've got 2 DDs aswell and I'm sooooo tired!

DaddyJ · 14/06/2007 13:45

I found a way of making 5:30am starts more bearable:
Let them wake you up at 4am the night before!

She got up at half past five this morning and I was sooo grateful

MaeBee · 14/06/2007 19:11

this morning i went in to my wideawake boy at 5.20, breastfed him and let him fall asleep on me while we both cuddled up on a chair in his room. i fell asleep too and we slept til 7!
would be happy to bring him back to bed with me, but i think the moving him from his room to mine would be too exciting and he goes into explore and play mode.
so i guess might do the chair game tomorrow. was nice to get a liein of sorts.

cruisemum1 · 15/06/2007 06:42

6.05am today .yippee! yippee! yippee! . feels like a lie-in!

yogimum · 15/06/2007 06:59

5.25 am this morning, yesterday and the day before. I did go to bed by 9pm one night which made it bearable but didn't quite make it last night and we had a terrible thunderstorm about 2am which woke me up, ds slept through it. I could live with 6am!

rislip · 15/06/2007 07:27

Mine was pre 5am ( i think ) this morning. I'm so over it...yawn

amyjade · 15/06/2007 09:46

Can i join in too.
Ds(7 months) gets up roughly between 5.30 and 6 am but the problem is he still wants to be fed at around 1 am. He is usually asleep by 7.30pm which i suppose is a good thing. I could probably cope with just him waking up as i could catch up on sleep in the day but the problem is Dd2(2) is still waking up in the night aswell!! luckily Dp deals with her but i still get woken again.
She used to get up around 7.30 am but Ds wakes her up around 6.30am shouting Da,Da,da. I'm so tierd!!

kath81 · 15/06/2007 11:25

DS had a lie in til 6.15 this morning!! and so now has decided he doesn't need his morning kip aaarrrgghh

cruisemum1 · 15/06/2007 12:57

"it's a phase, it's a phase, it's a phase...."
i should be counting my lucky stars really as until about a month ago ds was waking every 2hrs every night . Now he loves his kip!

cruisemum1 · 15/06/2007 12:57

I do console myself that when he wakes I can hear the road outside sounds quite busy. That means there are actually some people up and OUT by the time we all wake!!

MaeBee · 19/06/2007 15:31

5 oclock bloody start this morning! usual excuses, he's got 3 teeth coming in at the top, he's learning to walk, etc etc etc! he managed 2 hrs in the afternoon tho, and so did i!

swc - good for you!

Just read a few of the threads so maybe someone's already mentioned this...my DS (6.5months) has changed too, from 7am waking to 5.30am. Friends of mine swear by blockout curtains (sorry, postnatal brain means I can't remember the proper name) - apparently Argos do them for about £10 quid. It may well be the light mornings which is causing them to rise with the sun, after all that's how our bodies are designed (do you hear my weeping and gnashing of teeth?). Think I might buy some curtains tomorrow...
