How do you make your kids sleep in?

Currently just finishing a week away and going away in the summer.

How do you make your kids sleep in?

I want to be that couple sipping cocktails with the kids still up at 10:30pm but mine are up at 6am regardless of bedtime. Even when we get them to nap on hols. We end up reverting to normal bedtime as they're so tired. We use blackout blinds, the works

Is there a way?!

I'd like to do some long haul trips but no idea what happens when you put jet lag into this situation! Perhaps it helps depending on way of travel.

Mine are exactly the same!

Mine don't sleep in either (5 and 2).

DS2 wakes up at 5.30, whatever time he goes to bed. Hmm

DD is 5 and is usually up around 6.30am, sometimes she'll go later. I just hand her the iPad and she watches kids iPlayer or plays games until I'm ready to get up. She's not one for tv or computer games otherwise so I have no hang ups about using the iPad at 6am!

Some children will always wake early regardless unfortunately.

DD wakes up at 5.30/6 everyday as a rule but she will sleep later if she is up later on holiday (it takes 2/3 days to get in the new routine) but she still gets tired as she doesn't sleep late enough to make up the deficit IYSWIM.

No advice I'm afraid!

I am 36 and wake up at 5 no matter what time I go to bed. So sorry I can't help. I wish I knew the answer!

MyOtherProfile · 02/06/2018 06:39

Same problem here so we have always kept to normal bedtime pretty much with our kids. Now they're older we let them stay up late with us on holiday but they still don't really sleep in and are shattered by the end of a week.
The upside is you get ro sit around drinking cocktails and having adult time in the evening while they sleep. I miss that.

Do they have a solid routine at home? Mine sleep 7-7 without fail at home. We are away now and they are doing 9pm-9am with no time difference here. I wasn't sure it would work for them all (6, 3 and 1) but we shifted their entire routine 2 hours. So all meals and naps for the baby. Its been fantastic!!

Hasn't worked so well on me though!!

sleepymouse · 02/06/2018 06:42

I don't think you can! Mine are the same, awake before 6am regardless of what time they go to bed. Now they're old enough to get own breakfast we stay in bed and they're allowed to put Netflix on the weekends so we can sleep in.
I find it takes about 5 days for my kids to get over jetlag when we travel. Its very hard to convince them to try and sleep when the brain isn't tired.
I'll be interested to see if anyone else has some good tips

Don't know, dd is 7 and pretty much up at 6am guaranteed most days, with the odd mega lye in for surprise. Dd2 is pretty good at sleeping later if she goes to sleep later.

Faroutbrussel · 02/06/2018 06:53

I have given up, If I keep DS up late he just gets up at the same time and then is cranky.

SippingSipsmith · 02/06/2018 16:10

They have a solid routine at home. Bed is 7:30 and up at 6. I don't think I can expect them to sleep more than 11 hours at 5 years old but if I was to put them to bed at 10pm I think the latest they'd manage would be 7:30am!

I just hate coming back from dinner on hols when everyone else is on their way out!

We had a rule when my
SD was younger, she couldn't come into our room before 8am on a weekend and showed her how to read the time. She'd play in her room until then. Lol
