gina ford - sleep times for a one year old

When ds was about 6mnths old and his sleep pattern was upset, I got the Gina Ford book out of the library and found it helpful for a guide to naptimes. I did not follow everything else as it seemed a bit too rigid.
He has had a few late nights and due to family visiting etc. his nap time in the day has gone to pot. Yesterday he only slept for 30mins in the day and was really grouchy.
Can anyone give me her guide lines for nap times - he is 13 mnths old . I am having so much trouble getting on line that I may not be able to answer for a while but would be grateful for advice. Thanks.

hi, just dug my copy out. for 9-12 months she recommends naps at 9 for 45 mins and 12.30 for 2 hours. Eating is 7, 11.45, 2.30, 5, 6.30. She also recommneds cutting the morning nap to 30 mins if the midday nap is not going well. Good luck.

Thanks pesme
He doesnot seem to want two naps- but seem tired about 1pm , so I think I will take that as a guide

my 13mth old only has one nap a day, at about 1200 and is asleep for about an hour. hth

tassis · 13/08/2004 20:02

I think she suggests that your phase out the morning nap between 9 and 12 months. My 16 month old (a sort of Gina baby!) tends to sleep 1pm to 3pm and has been doing since we phased out his early morning sleep at about a year.

Also have a nearly 16 month old and have to say am intrigued by the whole 'Gina' business. Neither of ours have been 'Gina babies' but I have had a close routine with both. Just to be bloody nosey what does she recommend for sleeping and waking hours for this age??!! Sorry if I have hijacked this thread

hello all,

i have a 17 month old who is largely a gina ford baby. Like Tassis, our dd at about 12 months gave up her morning nap and has a nap from b/t 12.30/1pm to 2.30/3pm.
Good luck.
Those who did follow gina ford, would you recommend it? I would have to say that it worked for us but some of it you have to take with a pinch of salt, and it can easily take over your life!

yingers74 · 13/08/2004 21:28

poppy,

can't help you as pretty much gave up reading the book after dd turned 1. I imagine I will read her advice on potty training as she claims she can successfully do it in a week!!!!we will see............

poppyseed · 13/08/2004 21:28

That's what our DS does and he wakes in the morning at 7.30ish and is in bed at 7pm - does this go with her routine too do you know?

poppyseed · 13/08/2004 21:31

Yingers - sorry crossed!! We did potty training in about 10 days without Gina!! I am sure that you'll cope with or without her!! Good luck with it and buy lots of dettol spray in advance!!

yingers74 · 13/08/2004 21:37

poppy,

if my memory serves me right, gina ford thinks babies should go to bed at 7 and get up at 7! My dd is 7.30 to 7.30! Oops

it is a good book if basically you have no clue what to do, as the routines are literally hour by hour ie

7am - wake baby
7.30 eat breakfast
8am play with baby for 20 mins etc

it is quite reassuring, although rather restrictive. I don't think I would follow it with my next child, although I would do a routine

yingers74 · 13/08/2004 21:38

Have a good weekend, poppy. Nice chatting with you

poppyseed · 13/08/2004 21:42

There will be no others for us so I will never know Gina I'm afraid. I perhaps could have done with her for our first but Hey Ho!! We do have a routine with our second that seems to work pretty well for us so I hope she will forgive me for not following her lead!!!
Have a good weekend yourself . Nice talking to you too.

p.186 reference is interesting ginababe - since 12 months (now 17 months) dd has just had one nap around 11 am for 2 hours but still lasts till 7.30pm. It's great because we have time to prepare a nice fresh lunch but I didn't think it followed the usual Gina way.

josephine27 · 08/09/2004 21:49

my 16 month old dd sleeps at around 11.30-12.00 but only for about half an hour(unless i nap with her - 1 1/2 - 2 hrs!) then go's to bed around 7.30 but is never properly settled. she wont sleep anymore or have another nap unless we are in the car so you'd think she'd be ready for a good sleep at night wouldnt you?
