21 month old won't sleep in his own room

We've got ourselves into a right mess. DS is 21 months old. His sleep at home is terrible. He has napped in his own bed/cot about three times since he was born. We used to cosleep for naps, now I need to take him out in the car or in the pram. At nursery he could take himself to a mat on the floor and sleep for 2.5 hours no bother. It's insane.

The big problem is at night. He won't entertain sleeping before 9-10pm, and my husband has to take him out for a drive to fall asleep and then get transferred to me in our bed. If I leave the bed at any point he wakes and goes mental.

He hasn't slept in his own room since he was 17 months old (after a 3 month period of sleeping in it most of the night after bath/book/bed routine).

He gets hysterical whenever I try to spend any time in his room at night. Nothing has physically changed, he just knows that I'm going to try and get him to sleep in there.

What do I do?! We tried CC when he was younger and couldn't walk which worked well but what do you do when he's hysterical running at the door etc?

Nightmare.

Any help appreciated!

Sorry for the long post too, I could go on and on about how bad his sleep is and the many awful sleep associations we have encouraged!

But I did want to add we have asked his nursery to cut his naps short for a while now, as the long naps probably weren't helping our situation (not that it's made much of a difference).
