Logistics of moving from next2me to cot

Just wondering what's best...

6 month old EBF baby. In next2me but spends time in bed with me too if I fall asleep before putting him back (we safely cosleep quite often).

Ready to put him in cot because

  1. he's getting physically big
  2. he is now rolling at night and ends up squashed against the side
  3. we are waking each other up lots at night, nobody is sleeping deeply.

Part of me is very reluctant to move him as I love our closeness and know I'll also have to get out of bed for feeds etc! But if you don't try you'll never know, right? He may be loads happier in a big cot

Also- he's terrible with daytime naps, go-to is walks with pram but this will have to change soon as I need to convert it from carrycot mode. We've always been flexible with naps but feel he needs a routine of sorts now to provide continuity: strict nighttime routine = being able to put him down and walk away with no tears and a 4-5h chunk of sleep! I've been reluctant to start the sane routine for daytime naps as he WILL cry/scream, probably won't sleep and I don't want to ruin the one good thing we've got going (the night)

Soooo cot arriving today. I feel like it's a fresh start for the next stage!

Two things- I'll leave cosleeper in place, just in case, and I won't put him out of the room until he's comfortable rolling onto his back again.

Here are my options:

  1. crib in our room (plenty of space). Put him in here for naps and nighttime ASAP. Or naps only for now. Crib will definitely move to his room eventually

  2. crib in his room and either
    a) daytime naps only (being really strong and making sure he does nap there at least once a day. It'll help him as the quality of daytime on the move naps aren't great).
    b) put him in there for daytime and nighttime, in which case I'll have to sleep in there too for a while

Sorry, boring, complex and definitely overthinking. I'm just curious as to what worked for you? For what it's worth, I cannot currently put him down anywhere for daytime naps unless in pram. I'd like this to change....

I will still EBF him (won't take a bottle!)

And smaller second q- are cot mobiles a good idea or are they just a distraction from sleep?

Thanks! Sorry this is rambling, sleep is particularly scarce at the moment Grin

Option 1 followed by 2b but I gradually introduced my LO to own room, I used a crib in my room first with a babymoov body shape thing, then during day would potter about in her room getting her used to sights and smells etc, let her nap there with the babymoov, then put the babymoov into the cot with her over night too, I think she missed the snug walls of the crib so wasn't keen at first on a night but the babymoov thing was/is a godsend tbh because the shape was familiar.

Cot mobiles - the tunes are often stupidly loud but my LO loves something to bat and kick so for that I think they're good to keep them amused when dropping off/waking up! I got a musical one then switched to no sound box!
