Bedside Cots

Hiya, can anyone give me some advice regarding beside cots? We are considering the Snuzpod but the price is scaring us off because we are really not in a great financial position. I really like the idea of a bedside cot for ease for night feeds though especially as ideally I want to breastfeed. Have seen some places about 'hacking' a cheap Ikea cot, has anyone done this? If so could you explain exactly how you did this? I just think £200 for the Snuzpod is so steep given that judging by reviews some larger babies had outgrown it by 4 months old.

There was an very sad case with the bednest a few years ago where a baby tragically died. They've changed the design so the side no longer drops completely, but I guess manufacturers are now cautious about labelling things as safe to use with the side removed unless there's an alert adult beside baby.

We had a Bednest and the fold-down side got right in the way. Hated it! And DD grew out of it sooner than we were ready to put her in own room. I'd definitely go for a full size cot with side off fastened to our bed next time!

Also - the Bednest side does drop completely. You can no longer have it half way, which was the issue with the sad case referred to above. I also understand that in that case the baby was put down on their front well below recommended age and cot propped up at an angle which was thought to be a contributing factor. I just wanted to add that in case anyone who currently has one was worried. I heard about it after we got ours and it scared me, but there were a number of factors involved besides the (now altered) halfway mode.

WE have the tutti bambini cozee from Mothercare and have found it brilliant. Much bigger than a Moses basket and very easy to change between a stand alone cot and bedside cot (takes about 20 seconds).
You can take the whole thing down and put in a travel bag as well so no need for a travel cot

Babylo bedside crib here. Mattress & 2 sheets included for £100.

Another vote for the babylo. Best purchase we made. Goes up to 9kg I believe so way past 6months if you wanted

Bednest are brilliant. You hire them for about 80 quid for 7 months. You can travel with them too and they adjust to any height.
Yes there was a tragic event with one but I do not understand it to be an issue with the new design of bednest and also if used appropriately. I e used it for 2 babies and wouldn't hesitate to do for number 3.

I'm another that bought a second hand next to me ( Chicco) and sold it on for the same. I can honestly say it was revolutionary for me- and certainly made life a lot easier.

Gosh sorry!
I bought a second hand chicco next to me, it was ok (with a new mattress) but there was a lip on it which meant I still had to get LO out to feed ... in the end I had a cotbed , that I just took 1 side off (it does that anyway) pulled the mattress so it was snug against my bed and then put pool noodles in the gap at the far end.
LO was always snuggled to me anyway so it gave us more space

We have just bought a Mothercare Tutti Bambini Cozee for our first baby due in July. It has adjustable heights so we found it will fit against our bed ( with a very deep mattress) really well, and also means you can also raise or lower one end of the crib if you need to. The straps that hold it to the bed are sturdy and all in all seems well made. We likeD that fact the side can be zipped up and it seems to be sturdy as free standing cot. Also liked the fact it comes in a carry bag so can be used as a travel cot.Smile

We hired the Bednest and I hate it - my LO is 12 weeks and I've gone out and bought the tutti bambini one instead. The bednest drop side has a rigid frame so with the side down there is a massive space I can't lie on and can't get close to him to feed, pat etc. Much prefer the cozee and my back does too!

MeadowHay · 24/04/2018 19:53

We have gone with the Bednest in the end especially while the extra 10% off was on at the weekend. There were no realistic second hand options anywhere near us and decided we can't really afford to splash out on a full price one. If we don't like using it as a bedside crib then baby will just have to go in it as a standalone crib and then we will buy a cheap Ikea cot for when it's bigger I guess. Hopefully we will get on with it ok. Thanks everyone for your input.
