10.5mo won't stop bouncing around the cot!

Hi

DS is 10.5mo and for the past week it's been taking longer and longer to settle him for his afternoon nap.

Although he's not fully crawling yet, he's still managing to move around a fair bit using a combination of rolling, shuffling and crawling backwards. So when I put him down for his nap he straight away reverses to the end of his cot, sits up, bangs his dummy on the side and then gets upset.

I've just spent half an hour going back in over and over again to lay him down. He has finally worn himself out and nodded off. But it's getting harder each day.

Did this happen to anyone else's baby when they discovered they could move around the cot? If so, please tell me it's a phase and that it doesn't last long! Confused

It happened to me with DS1 and it is just a phase. They just love to practice the new skills they learn shame it's so fucking annoying when you just want them to sleep

DS1 did this a lot at the same age. But as he was happy enough bouncing around I left him to it and he'd fall asleep eventually. He used to babble and chatter away to himself and sing when he was a bit bigger, it was very cute! If he cried or got grumpy I'd go in and settle him back down again.

It was a major factor in moving him into a normal bed aged 17m though. He'd reached the stage where he was in danger of tipping the cot over as he bounced so it wasn't safe any more. Then he just rolled round his bed and sang for ages before nodding off instead.

DD does this, she usually gives up after about 5 minutes, decides she is tired and goes to sleep.

I find she bounces around for much longer if I’m there (I think she likes having an audience!) so I just pop her down in the cot, close the curtains and walk away closing the door behind me. I don’t go back in and resettle, well I would if she was upset but she never is.

Well it's good to know that this is fairly normal and should eventually pass Smile

It had just been affecting afternoon naps, but bedtime tonight has pretty bad too. If DS didn't get upset I'd be inclined to leave him to it, but once he's sat up at the bottom of the cot he gets in a state. I think it's because he doesn't know how to get back down again. But then as soon as I put him down, he's up again! Argh!

Mine is 10 months next week and is just the same. He’s been crawling, cruising, climbing etc and treats his cot like a training ring for the aforementioned!

He’s never been great at napping for long, but has mainly been easy to settle (except during months 4/5). Until now. It’s been taking me 40 minutes to an hour to get him down in the afternoon and the same at night. Argh!

I’m sucking it up because he’s finally only waking up once at night, or occasionally sleeping through, and napped for 2 1/2 hours yesterday which is almost unheard of - I’m lucky if I get 2 x 40 minute naps out of him usually.

We definitely had a phase where he was getting upset because he could stand up but not get down again. He’s over that but still being a pain to get to sleep. The only other upside is that he now sits bolt upright every now and starts clapping just as I think he’s about to drop off, which is super cute and makes me laugh.

Eek. Sorry for ramble. Still trying to get him to nap!

New development on my end... DD can now stand up in her cot. Morning nap time was a disaster and with it went the chance to nicely blow dry my hair ffs. She will be put in the sleeping bag for this afternoon’s nap in the hope this curtails her gymnastic efforts! I only got max x2 45 minutes at the best of times even before this though Sad

lambdroid · 13/04/2018 20:58

Don’t get your hopes up for the sleeping bag! It doesn’t stop mine at all, alas.

He fell asleep on a dog walking for 45 mins this morning, then finally went down for 45 mins in the afternoon after close to an hour of trying, then woke up and fed/snuggled for 30 mins and then stayed asleep for another hour. Not at all complaining, though. He’s never slept this. Maybe he’s finally tiring himself out. Hope you get the same!

Oh no @TroubledLichen! That's what I'm dreading, the standing-up phase, because it's bad enough just with the sitting up! I can see DS looking at the cot bars trying to figure out how to pull himself up so I don't think it'll be long. I hope the sleeping bag works for you.

Ha the sitting up and clapping made me laugh @lambdroid. They are little rascals aren't they. Normally it's just as I'm approaching the end of my tether with DS when he'll do something cute and entertaining.
