Why does DD feel the need to see 5am all of a sudden?

3 nights in a row DD has woken at 5 and not gone back to sleep. (the last 2 nights she has woken at 1am as well and last night she woke at 10, 1 and 5). She is 15 months.
This morning I gave her some paracetemol at 5 in case she is teething but it did nothing!

She is going back down okay during the night(I use PUPD) but once it has gone 5 she starts screaming 5 minutes later and I have to go and start again.

I am wrecked, I am pregnant, I can't cope!

sorry not really got any advice but bump for you incase someone else can help!

Mum2FunkyDude · 11/05/2007 19:32

is it possible that she can see some light coming through a window? I had to make sure no light comes into ds room and he has now been sleeping till 6am.

Chirpygirl · 11/05/2007 19:58

Thanks for bump. My mum suggested that about the light so I have tried to block it tonight. She does have blackout linings on her curtais but the curtains aren't flush to teh window IYSWIM, plus her window is southfacing...shall let you know if it works....

I fell asleep on the sofa this afternoon, the first I knew of it was when DD smacked me round the face with a book....!

just been thinking about your post. My ds often wakes at around 5ish and will not settle back to sleep so I end up bringing him to bed and bf there. He is 8mths btw. I really don't want to get into this habit as he sometimes wakes earlier than that and expects the same which causes tears and confusion. Maybe instead of pu/pd you could just leave dd in her cot and comfort from there? maye persistence is the key if you are sure nothing else is bothering her???

Hello, I've got the same problem with my 14 month ds. He sleeps through from 7pm but whereas he used to go through until at least 6am, now he is waking up anywhere from 4.30 onwards. Sometimes I can just ignore him and he will eventually settle and go back to sleep but sometimes he is just up and ready for the world. I also have blackout curtains but like you Chirpy, there's still plenty of light getting in round the edges. Did your additional light block work last night?

When I do go to ds I try all my usual methods to get him back to sleep but it can take nearly 2 hours by which time its 7am and I have to get ready for work anyway, so i didn't get any more sleep than if I just let him get up.

Do we just have to grin and bear it until the autumn?

cruisemum1 · 13/05/2007 09:20

fluff - does your lo have daytime naps? could he be gettig too much daytime sleep?

fluffyanimal · 13/05/2007 09:25

He has one nap late morning or early afternoon, usually about an hour and a quarter. He wouldn't last without that nap. I try not to let him sleep longer than that.

I have to say, the reason why I am MNing now is because he was tired from waking up early this morning and has gone down for a nap. I couldn't really stop him, he just slowed down.

babygrand · 13/05/2007 09:27

Sorry to say this, but some children (and adults!) are just early risers. Yes, it is light by 5am at the moment, so the body does naturally wake then. My kids have always woken early, but the good thing is that now they are old enough to amuse themselves until I get up.

Okay, blocking light had no effect, unless you cunt me walking into her cot by accident as I couldn't see it an effect....

I think she is teething a molar as she has a HEWUGE lump on her gums so shall say it is that and deal with it. I now only have to pick her up once and the rest of the time I can pat her to shush her which is so much better on my back, and I have put a chair next to the cot so it's not hurting my back anymore.

She is still waking at 6 but sleepily entertains herself with her cot toys (teddies, a book and a musical thingy) for an hour before shouting for me.

She only naps for an hour and a half just after lunch, she only got half an hour on saturday and woke 4 times, so I don't knwo if that is it.
