Toys in bed - creating a potential prob?

Dd (20 months) has been in her "big girl" bed for just over a week now and has insisited on taking her thomas the tank engine and a mega blocks cat to bed with her. Bed guard has a pocket in so when we check on her before going to bed we just move them into pocket - not keen on her sleeping with hard plastic toys. Just popped her down for a nap and let her take a small tower of mega blocks with her - she's playing in bed just now but I know she'll settle and sleep shortly. However would rather that she just stuck to the other two things for bedtime as don't want her up playing half the night. Do most wee ones want to take random toys other than soft ones to bed and am I creating a problem - don't want to end up having to empty half the toy box out of her bed every night?

Yes, DS takes random non-soft toys to bed with him and it hasn't developed into a problem. It's a couple of toys a night, hasn't really escalated although it does tend to be different toys each night. And he doesn't seem to actually play with them, either, just likes having them there.

I generally let the children take whatever toys they want into bed with them (as long as they don't have sharp edges or long strings), but take the batteries out of any noise-makers or flashing lights.

Sounds reasuring so far - she's quite clingy at the moment partly because dh has been away since Weds - back tomorrow and also we're expecting No2 in about 6 weeks time and I'm sure that's having an impact just now. Trying to make everything else feel as stable and good for her as I can just now as in for big changes. However don't want to end up creating probs coz I'm trying to make things easy IYSWIM. The whole bed thing has been easier than we hoped but the rules somehow feel different from when she was in the cot - partly I think because there's more room in the bed.

Hello!

Ds has always (since his cot) loved taking random things to bed (and many of them non-toys)

At the moment he has a photos of some friends, some figures and lots and lots of what he likes to call "small cars". Only rule with us is nothing noisy!

Works for us.

Sounds like she's doing great.

Ds1 (3 1/2) also takes random toys to bed. Became a bit of an issue for a month when clocks changed forward last year as was too dark to see his toys and he wanted the light on, but we got through that in the end. Still takes toys on occasion. Would rather he stays in bed with the odd toy than he gets out to look for one.

haha, ds1 and dd have zillions of toys in their bed. Ds1 has all his 'superheros' (Buzz lightyear et al) plus a Mr Potato Head etc. Can't do anything about it, and he does play with them rather than go to sleep, but at least he generally stays in his bed!

Thanks everyone!

Hi Tassis - I'll not stress too much then! Can't believe it's only 6 weeks til our new wee one arrives, bit scared what with a potetial move on the horizon - still waiting for news on jobs!

my dd(5) is currently in bed cuddling a ribbon! (Before anyone gets excited it is a six inch by 2 inch strip, which couldn't possibly strangle her). She also has many many soft toys, and her allegiance changes regularly, thank goodness!

dd2 had a spate of going to bed in her wellies and carrying an umbrella

They grow out of it, she now has 2 or 3 fave sft toys and books and noteb=pad and pen and ....

Twiga · 11/05/2007 20:36

Wellies and umbrella - cute!

My DS (3.1) has taken to going to bed with offcuts of plastic pipe from DP's DIY plumbing extravaganza! And he would take the contents of my jewellery box if he was allowed. I think it is very normal for LOs to want to take things they're interested in or their treasures to bed with them. It's sometimes been handy as a way of getting him into bed if he's resisting - I offer to let him take something "special" that he might not usually be allowed to have to bed with him.

Twiga · 11/05/2007 20:53

That was my thinking to be honest, let her take the odd thing save any hassle. Have to admit was copping out to a certain extent as with dh away and being 34 wks pg with bad spd really need life to be simple right now! My worry was that in trying to save hassle now I'm storing it up for later - however very reassured that this seems to be a normal toddler development thing and that other parents are going with it to, so thanks for all the stories. Dd sounds like she has very ordinary choice so far - wander what funny items she'll want in the future - pipe off-cuts are pretty out there 1

DD has always taken odd toys and bits & pieces to bed with her.

For a while she would take a wooden spoon with her.

Now she is 3.4yrs, she has her books and a torch.

It much easier to let her have her muslins, and 3 teddy's (small) and for her to read her books (look at) by torch light. I check on her before i go to bed turn of her torch and put in her pocket of her bed guard and remove her stack of books to the end of her bed. Sho goes off to sleep with no problem.

Aw some very cute bed pals here! Love the photos of friends and wellies and umbrella!

DS1 a bit predictable with Tigger and Piglet although now he's 4 he thinks that Power Rangers should make it in with him!!
