Pick up put down - 35 min naps and night wakings 6mo.

I know I will get flamed for posting (again) but I have been using PUPD for my 6mo for the past week and I may have hit a rut. Any suggestions please on experience.

Generally hes improved. Last night he did a 4.5hour stint (after 11 weeks of 45min wakes and then 2 hours it's a miracle). He was moved to his nursery from a side cot 2 nights ago.

But. Its bloody hard going. After the 4.5hour stint in the night he took 1hr 10 to settle. 4 wake ups in total between 8pm and 7.15am

What I am doing:

Sleep bag etc for naps same as bed time with white noise. Hes fed then laid in his cot awake. He cries and I pick up shush, he settles usually resting head on me to sleep and I lay him down. His head hits the bed and he cries so I repeat. It can take anywhere from 1 go to god knows how many (in the hour this morning for example). I am concerned however that he may just be eventually nodding off and I am putting him down 99% asleep is this possible?? For the naps I have seen him lay wide eyed then nod off but much more difficult at night.

Naps he wakes after 35mins everytime and he wakes 45min into each night sleep but will do longer after.

I know it takes persistence but what I dont want to do is swap feeding to sleep to shushing or whatever and create a new problem.

As a result of these short naps he has 3x a day. This morning he woke at 7.15am and he napped 9.25am until 10am. He is obviously still tired Sad. He is typically going 2hr 15 to 2 30 between naps. Maybe 3 hours before bed at 7-8pm

Thank you.

did you feed him after the 4.5 hour sleep in the night? Maybe hunger stopped him settling

Not got any advice I'm afraid but I'm in a similar boat, DD is almost 7 months and will only do 30-35 min naps (if she even goes down at all). It does my head in cos she must be tired but she just refuses to sleep and will lie there wide awake rolling around. She also wakes at least 4 times a night. We tried pick up put down but gave up as it didn't seem to work/we didn't have the persistence for it. We put a hand on her chest to comfort her and try not to pick her up at all now and she has improved in the first half of the night, after that not so much...

@dementedpixie yeah i fed him every wake but put him down awake. He slept:
35min
2 hours
4.5hours
1 hour
Generally takes 25 -35 min to feed and settle (sometimes quicker) but the 1 hr settle last night nearly killed me!

Only fed after the 35min wake as he was so tried after bath I didnt think he had full feed and was mega cranky

Hes so tired now Sad

Longer naps is a developmental step that takes some babies longer than others to get. There's some reassuring blogs on the website baby sleep science, if you google.

DS1 was 6-7 months before he started to lengthen his. Before he did, he would always nap longer in arms and would sleep better at night if he'd had at least one longer nap during the day.

So, I used to get him to fall asleep (with a dummy and swaddle) in his cot, usually for the lunch time nap, run and make/eat lunch, then pick him up at the 40 min mark and keep him asleep for another hour/hour and a half. I figured at least he was getting the practice of falling asleep in his cot.

6/7 months, he started to sleep 1-1.5 hours at that nap, all in his cot (although I had gone back to work at exactly this point so couldn't enjoy it Hmm).

If he'd only done 35 mins for all naps, I may have done 4 during the day, or awake time may be too long?

The short naps is to do with sleep cycles- after 45 mins deep sleep you go into a light sleep - if you sneak in just before this you shd be able to shh them back to sleep also helps if not overtired when go down for a nap as the contrast between deep and light sleep will be stronger so more likely to wake up and cry

Jellybabie3 · 09/04/2018 17:26

Yeah hes had 4 naps today because hes tired. Albeit I had him weighed today and the health visitor told me not to do this as she said the routine is more important so stick to 2hr 15 to 2hr 30 awake time instead regardless of nap length. I have done 4 naps anyway as I am too worried he will be overtired!
