Silent reflux

Hi,

Im new to mum's net and am hoping some of you might be able to give some advice!
I have a 5 week old little boy who I think is suffering from silent reflux.
I have spoken with my HV and been to see our GP who has prescribed him with some infant gavascone but I'm not showing any signs of improvement yet.
I know I need to give it time but wondered if anyone else's baby had suffered from silent reflux and if there was anything you tried that worked? I hate seeing him so unsettled.
The only time he is settled is when he is upright on my chest. He is barely sleeping at night in his cot. We have it elevated so it is not completely flat but he is still very uncomfortable being on he's back.

Thanks for reading
Jodie

I always suspected my DD bad silent reflux but my gp wouldn’t prescribe anything as it’s hard to diagnose. We had a sleepyhead and she slept on her side in it during the day and gradually it got better.

DD has had symptoms of silent reflux since she was 6 weeks. It is currently under control but in the beginning it was really bad. She used to scream blue murder and arch her back at every feed. It was clear she was hungry but she could not have milk because she was in pain.

The first GP I saw sent me away with gaviscon (which did not help). I then made a video of DD feeding (she has a very loud cry so it must have looked quite convincing) and went to see a different doctor who was great. He prescribed ranitidine and suggested that I try anti-reflux milk. In 10 days DD turned into a different baby. She still kept her loud high pitched cry as a "go to" sound at any minor sign of discomfort but she started enjoying her milk and eventually became a brilliant sleeper. She is currently 14 months old and is still on medications. We tried to wean her off a couple of times but she was not ready.

If your DS does not have trouble feeding, he may have issues with wind rather than reflux. I would try different burping techniques and see if it works. If you think your LO is in pain during his feeds, I would try ranitidine (you may have to insist to get a prescription - some GPs seem to think that "all babies cry and as long as they gain weight, it is normal").

Yes we have a sleepyhead and that's what he has at night in his cot. I haven't tried putting him on he s side though so will give that a go!

Thanks so much for all your advice xx I will see how he gets on with the gavascone and if not maybe do a video like you did and show my HV /GP at he's 6 week check! I hate seeing him in pain. I definately think it's a combination of wind / reflux. I'm breastfeeding at the moment but really want to try and get him on formula but am a little nervous as to how it will affect he's tummy! Xx
