I've just bought a sleepyhead...

Have I made a terribly expensive mistake?!

DD is 2 weeks old and every night I've been in tears of frustration over feeding and sleeping. The feeding is better thankfully, but the sleeping is atrocious. She loves to be swaddled and will fall asleep being cuddled. When we put her down in the evening when we go to bed she is fine but when she wakes up for her feeds putting her down in the bedside cot is a nightmare.

She just wants to be cuddled! I don't feel comfortable co-sleeping as we only have a double bed and there's not a lot of room. I can only sleep well on my stomach with the duvet up to my shoulders and a pillow over my head (I know!) which isn't exactly going with the safe co-sleeping guidelines.

And I'm so frightened if I fall asleep cuddling her I'll smother her or she'll overheat.

Has the sleepyhead proved to be the miracle answer for anyone else? Will we just be facing the same problems in a few months time when she grows out of it?

I'm torn by the fact that it's a huge amount of money for us and the fact that I turn into a raving banshee at night because i'm so tired and frustrated!

My friend had one and raved about it. I'd be really interested to hear how you get on.

Tuckingfypo · 14/03/2018 16:47

@SpottyBrolly if we decide to take the plunge and use it I will definitely report back!

I had a friend who had one before her baby was born and she said baby was a great sleeper. Not sure how much of that was the sleepyhead and how much was down to the baby just being a good sleeper.

We only got a good nights sleep when we moved DD1 to her own room, we won't have that option this time as new baby will be sharing with DD1 so we want her to have as long as possible with us so she doesn't disturb the oldest child.

I'm just hoping it's the miracle cure that (nearly) everyone says it is! Gin

The best thing we ever brought! It was an absolutely life saver my baby loved it and slept so well in it I’ve just brought the big version (even if it is stupid money for a giant pillow I’d pay 10 x more for good sleep at night!) good luck with yours!

pastabest · 14/03/2018 16:50

I don't know if it will be the miracle you are hoping for just yet as it may just be that your baby hasn't yet got day and night the right way round and no amount of fantastic gear will sort that out, just time.

That said, I had a sleepyhead type nest from birth for my DC and thought it was fab.

Good luck!

Tuckingfypo · 14/03/2018 16:51

@Myusername2015 omg you have given me renewed hope!! Please pray for me that mine will be as compliant as yours! Grin

Sleepyhead was brilliant for us, hope it works for you!

Bananarama12 · 14/03/2018 16:58

We have the sleepy head and it's great. We are going through the 4 month regression hell on earth and I can't imagine how much worse it would be without it. Pray for me 😴😴

123456kent · 14/03/2018 16:59

I survived one night without it, called the hospital at 2am and cried to a midwife and she suggested it, so we brought one the next morning.
It wasn’t a miracle answer to our problems, I still didn’t get a lot of sleep for weeks but it definitely helped.
Dd is 5 months. Tried to wean her off 2 weeks ago and it looked like it was fine, then she started sleeping terribly, so it’s back, and she’s ok again. Not sure what we will do when she outgrows it. But if I could turn back time I would still have bought it!!

Please read the lullaby trust guidance on safe sleep and accessories such as sleepyheads. Sleepyhead may be classed as a sleep positioned or near which does come with risks.

www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/

GinIsIn · 14/03/2018 17:17

It’s not classed as a sleep positioner.

Bobbiepin · 14/03/2018 17:24

It's the only thing my DD would sleep in in the early days (that wasn't me or dh). Even now she doesn't lile her new crib so we put the sleepyhead in it and its the best night's sleep we've had in a month.

GuntyMcGee · 14/03/2018 18:54

It may not technically be classed as a sleep positioner but it is soft and enclosed, which carries potential for overheating and therefore carries SIDS risk. Safe sleep guidance advises baby and blankets only in a sleep space. Sleepyhead is essentially a pillow with a pillow roll around it and worse still when it's wedged into a crib or Moses basket. Let's not be pedantic about the wording of what something is classed as when said item goes against safe sleep guidance.

Use it if you wish, but be aware that they can carry risks to your baby.

My daughter is 16 days old and I tried to sleep her in her snuzpod on her back just on mattress but she screamed and she just seemed really uncomfortable with wind and we got no sleep.
So I now sleep her on a cacoonababy within her pod and I've just had a whole 4 hours sleep. She absolutely loves it. I have just ordered the sleepyhead for her in hope that she will feel the same about it.
I do panic about the safety guidelines but I read so many positive things about the cacoonababy and sleepyhead.
It's a minefield for first time mums .. I just need some reassurance I'm doing the right thing

Clickncollect · 15/03/2018 09:50

Loved loved loved ours - best purchase ever!

pimlicolife · 15/03/2018 09:53

It was/is a miracle worker for us.
My daughter still sleeps in it every night and she's 7 1/5 months now.

Absolutely worth the money.

ChocolateRaisin · 15/03/2018 09:53

I have a sleepyhead and my daughter hates it and won’t go in it at all. She will either settle in her next to me crib (she didn’t do that until she was 10 weeks old) or we have to co sleep as she will just not settle. She’s now 15 weeks, going through the 4 month sleep regression and is back co sleeping again. It’s the only way we can both get any decent sleep. I’ve tried to her her to nap in the sleepyhead during the day and she refuses that also.

GoodJobShesCute · 15/03/2018 09:55

Our bubs was tiny (IUGR) and looked terribly small even in a bedside crib and the sleepyhead was a godsend for us and her. We are both total paranoids about safe sleeping and felt really comfortable with the sleepyhead. Yes it's expensive and I'm not planning on buying the bigger version but in my view it was totally worth it. We used it until about 5 months when she seemed to need more space to move her arms.

TheVanguardSix · 15/03/2018 09:57

There are no miracles. But the Sleepyhead offered me respite I wasn't getting, especially during the day. Newborns don't have a sense of day or night. They sleep when they sleep and feed when they feed.
However, the Sleepyhead was one of the best purchases I'd ever made. It had only come out when DC3 was born. I could have done with it with DCs 1 and 2.

Katurah · 15/03/2018 09:58

My sleepyhead is hands down the best purchase I made. My son would only sleep on my chest and slept through the first night I put him in the sleepyhead. We upgraded to the grande at 8 months and he slept in that until he went into a single bed at 2.

My 7 month old daughter is now enjoying the sleepyhead too! We wouldn't be without it.

xxxbdjaix · 15/03/2018 10:08

Didn't work for our DD she wanted to be in bed with us but to starfish at the same time. We got a nap mat from Nonnas baby which she liked. However if your DD likes to be swaddled then yes she might like it. A lot of people sell them on after on so you might get some of your money back esp if it's in good condition.

theworstwife · 15/03/2018 11:18

Worked amazingly for us, also had the bigger one. Forgot it once when DS was around 12 months and he was fine without for then - no elaborate weaning off required

gigi556 · 15/03/2018 13:40

Was not a miracle answer for us...

VileyRose · 15/03/2018 13:43

Brought a super king size bed instead. Much better

LoadsaBlusher · 15/03/2018 13:54

My baby didn’t sleep any better in it
I’ve got 3 DC
DC 3 was in it for first 4 Months
Was up 3/4 times a night and still is
Sorry
But it wasn’t a miracle for us

Yes DC looked comfy in it but certainly didn’t keep them asleep

Tuckingfypo · 18/03/2018 17:51

So thought I would come back and update, although it's not terribly exciting!

We decided to have one more night before we opened the sleepyhead and that night DD settled in her cot without any fuss and slept really well! Up approx every 2.5-3 hours for a feed and settled back to sleep in her side cot relatively easily!

Obviously I didn't expect the sleepyhead to make DD sleep 7-7 as she's so young and due to weight loss she needs to feed every 3 hours during the night, but I was hoping she would settle without screaming and wanting to be cuddled to sleep! Now she seems to be doing that without the sleepyhead so we'll be returning it as it's still unopened and hoping she continues to settle well Smile

And if it all goes tits up I'll be straight to the shop to re-buy!
