Sleep and feeds

Hi all :)

Just a bit of advice my baby is 5 weeks old, we currently wake him every 3 hours in day for feeds (bottle fed) to hope he sleeps better at night. At what point should we let him go longer?

We have also started to introduce a bedtime routine as we were putting him down at 11:30pm and he was up again 3 hours later then again in another 3 hours so we now bath him, bottle and bed for around 9pm. He is still up around every 3 hours any tips on how to get him to go longer?

Bit small yet! Mine does go longer sometimes but she's a lazy thing... is he draining the bottle each feed?

Kathjax · 08/03/2018 22:22

He does sometimes and others will leave a bit! We have just had him on prescribed milk and a referral to see a dietrician as he’s very sick after feeds

My DD is 5 months almost. She has just starting going the whole night without a bottle. But she does wake between 1-3 times to have her dummy back. Your baby is still very young don't worry they go longer in between feeds when they're ready! Babies are very unpredictable one night they may sleep right through, then they may never sleep right through again until a few weeks/months down the line. Just go with it and feed on demand Smile

Three hours between feeds at five weeks is good! He is still very young with a tiny stomach. Keep up with the evening routine you have established and he'll go longer eventually

Feed on demand at 5 weeks old!! It will go up and down, let it happen naturally.

So should I not wake him in the day

We woke ours in the day (twins) for at least 4 months, but let them go longer at night if they could. We started to let them go more like 4 hours at 6 weeks old at night but stuck to 3 hours in the day for a long time

I have been told no need to wake after two weeks.

I am not sure establishing a routine at such an early age is necessary and to just go with baby.

Mine has been sleepin for four hours and then two hours after. Last two nights did six hours both nights.

I'm hoping this is the start of something, but I am not getting my hopes up too much as baby sleep is said to be erratic. He has a bedtime routine which is similar as he feeds and then has nappy changed if he feeds and then he is put to bed and goes to sleep- this is anywhere between 11 and 12.30 currently as he dictates it.

I do not bath him every night as he has sensitive baby skin- will work my way up to every other day, but currently twice a week.

rubyroot · 09/03/2018 22:01

Meant nappy changed if he shits.

Im learning not to get stressed re sleep and to just go with it- my baby is 9 weeks by the way and I have just had (last two nights) my first six hour stretch.

RandomMess · 09/03/2018 22:05

Yes wake in the day and less so/not at night. Presumably you could do 4-5 hours during night - last feed before you go to sleep wake up 4/5 hours later then go back to sleep get up for day 4 hours later?

Kathjax · 11/03/2018 21:44

I change his nappy before every feed so should I just Chang him if he pood?

Dirty or very wet during the night was my motto.

TroubledLichen · 11/03/2018 21:56

All babies are different but personally I found (bottle-fed) DD was actually taking on more milk during the day once we stopped waking her and she was going more like 4 hours between feeds. I think she was hungrier at her feeds so ultimately took more milk. This might not work for you if yours has reflux though, just giving you my experience in case it helps.

Re the nappy changes pre feeds, I’d stick with it if it works for you (I did the same) but definitely don’t change over night unless there’s poo.

Jellybaby75 · 12/03/2018 09:27

We didn’t wake to feed our baby. We just trusted that when he was hungry, he would wake himself. Yes, he woke during the night but eventually as they figure out that night time is for sleeping and more awake time between naps, you can cram in as much feeds as you can during these awake times during the day or just feed on demand. Just go with the flow.
