10 week old only sleeps 10 hours!

So I've got a 10 week old baby girl who's such a lovely little character. Rarely cries and is very alert and smiley with everyone. The only problem is she point blank refuses to nap during the day. She has slept through the night since 3 weeks old (10pm-7am) but then during the day I'm lucky to get maybe 3 x 20 minute naps out of her. She's not grumpy or showing any signs that she's tired but I'm just worried it could somehow be effecting her development since as she's meant to have 16-18 hours sleep for her age. Her weight and overall health is perfect and she's hitting all her milestones, so am I daft to be worrying? I don't mind her being awake during the day but I wouldn't mind if she took longer naps so I could get some housework done without feeling like I'm ignoring her😳

Have you tried a sling? Mine hardly ever napped and is just starting to sleep longer stretches in the day at 1, but the sling helped a bit.

Have you tried going by awake time rather than looking for tired signs? So at her age, after 90mins awake you'd be looking for a nap. For me, that's anyway possible - fed to sleep, cosleep, cot, pram, car, sling, etc. Then, however long the nap, you repeat once she's been awake for 90mins.

She could be one of those babies who doesn't need much sleep but they're extremely rare. And if not she definitely needs more sleep so I'd say get as many regular naps in as you can, then once you've got that cracked you can start to worry about housework.

Btw, I've always coslept for naps or been in the car, pram or sling and I've always done jobs when mine have been awake. I find it much easier and less stressful. I don't leave them for ages obviously but I find it easier to quickly do something for 10mins with them playing (or sat in a bouncy chair at your age) then stressing about getting them to sleep and then getting on with something.

Also you're not too far off the age for a Jumperoo which are amazing for short bursts of getting jobs done.

I think you are over-worrying, my eldest daughter was terrible at napping in the day and also terrible at sleeping at night (would wake every 40mins)

She had a lovely temperament though and her development hasn't been affected. Enjoy her and those lovely long stretches at night.

Neither of my dc napped by day until they were 8 months, it happens don't stress it.
Their development wasn't affected in any way

I never got more than 3x20 mins out of my DD. She dropped down to 2x20 mins at 6 months and 1x20 mins before she was 12 months. Around the time of her first birthday, naps were history. She did sleep through the night from 6 weeks though.

She never slept in the car or in a sling either.

It doesn't seem to have harmed her development and now she is a teenager she likes her bed.

My DD was just the same. I was lucky if I could get any sleep into her and she was only having several very short cat naps and jumping awake at everything. At 9 weeks I introduced the sling. She went from hardly anything to 3 x 2hr naps! I'd honestly give it a try.

Babies are not supposed to sleep thru the night, yours does and is presumably happy to do so therefore as she is getting older she will be more alert and may need less sleep in the day than others. Please look at your daughter and avoid the parenting information to compare against, she seems fine so all appears well Wink
