anyone else let their baby sleep on their tummies?

I feel very ashamed and guilty about this but there are times when I'm so desperate for my ds to sleep I put him on his tummy. I know that I'm guaranteed hours of sleep this way.

It's only for 50% of his sleeping hours, but I can't talk to anyone about it as it's so frowned upon.

Does anyone else do it, or am I going to get shot down??

Now my dd is 8 months, she roles over herself onto her tummy. It's more comfy for them,so don't feel bad,coz they do it themselves eventually!

Some babies need to sleep on their stomachs IMO. Just make sure he has his hands free and is not over heated. My first 2 babies slept on their stomachs all the time - they were the best sleepers. The other 2 were on their backs because of the new guidance then. My sister had a very colicky baby and the HV suggested haveing her sleep on her stomach during the day when she could keep an eye on her. You don't need to tell anyone what you are doing though.

My dd did, from 10 days. If you makes sure you have none of the other risk factors it's not a hanging offence.

my 5 month old baby rolls himself over onto his tummy ALL the time now...like you I was so worried at first, but what can I do?!

Dont worry. xx

Both of mine did it from very early on, and after a while I just let them get on with it. I co-sleep, so I figured I was close at hand to keep an eye on them.

my DD did it too, it was the only way she slept. didn't feel quilty because i knew this was more comfortable for her, so just put her on her tummy all the time. when she turned 3months or so, she didn't mind sleeping on her back.
but i didn't tell anybody about it

DD did from a very early age. It was the only piece of advice we didn't follow so we decided to continue. She's 4 now and still prefers to sleep on her tum!

Both my sons sleep on their tummies and did so from early on. I also did it all those years ago too. DS1 is almost 4 yrs old and if he sleeps on his back he puts his hand on his tummy. I think he likes having the pressure of his hand there.

DS2 is almost 1 and was never happy on his back. I had a v supportive HV who just checked that I had a new matress for DS2. At the end of the day if they sleep I wouldn't care if they hung upside down like a bat you may notice that I am posting this at 4am having got up to give DS1 reassuring cuddle -he is cutting a top tooth, it means I am wide awake. JOY!

As long as you follow all the other advice for cot death ie overheating, no smoking etc then let him lie on his tummy.

Sunyshineymummy · 07/05/2007 04:24

My DS prefers his tum and, as soon as he could roll over at three months, refused to go on his back again. My HV said that once they can roll the risks decrease anyway so I stopped worrying about it.
