Should I just buy her a toddler bed?

So dd was fine in her moses until she grew out. I tried to gradually transition her to the crib but putting the moses in it first and taking it out when she's properly outgrew up. (around 6 months old) she's 1 in April. An from 6 months it's been a long long road. She doesn't like her crib. I'm not sure if it's the bars etc I don't know. She just screams in it no matter what tactic I take. I never let her cry it out. I don't believe in that but every night is just constant moaning from her. Last night it was all night and she's had a really worrying habit of repeatedly smacking her head on things. I woke up to her doing that last night and it's worried me so much. I've checked her over and I don't think she's hurt herself but her arm was stuck in the bars too. So I bought her in next to me.
I'm really worried to put her back in her crib now. She sleeps fine once she's on a bed. Should I buy a toddler bed? Obviously with guards etc

My DD hates the cot too. She is in with me at the moment because she has picked up bug after bug from nursery so waking a lot anyway, but I plan on putting her in a toddler bed soon. She is 14months though so maybe a bit older than yours. I have noticed over the last couple of weeks that she has much better awareness of the edge of the bed now, but I would still use the guards.

Have you tried a travel cot? If she doesn't like the bars then that might be an option.
You can get safe cot bumpers made out of mesh that look like the side of a travel cot that are breathable and will stop her getting her arms stuck. They're not like the padded ones, they are tight against the bars.

DS was like this. He ended up in bed with me until he was about a year old. Not what I wanted, but it meant be slept.

Mine has been on his cot mattress on the floor with foam bed guards since he was about 7 months. It's nice because we can lie down next to him on a fold out mattress with a hand on him to calm him when he doesn't want to sleep. The bed guards just stop him falling out, he can and does get out when he wants so we've babyproofed the room but we have a video monitor so we can always get to him before he goes wandering alone. Might be worth a try as a quick fix before shelling out for a new bed?

I think if your thinking of a toddle bed at this age then might aswell get a full size single (with bed guards) if you have space so that its one less transition later on. At this age they wont know the difference. My wee girl went from our bed/cot against our bed to a full size at 14 months as she could walk. We had it just on the base without the legs for a couple of months or so so she could get in!

Also much easier to lie next to them and read a bed time story!

I'll have a look for some mesh bumpers today :( I'm so stuck for what to do. I tried a travel cot but the same thing, she just hates being enclosed I think :(

Yeah, that sounds familiar, mind didn't like being enclosed either. He never slept in his cot during the day (preferred the sofa or the floor) and at night was in with me. At about 1 he went onto the cot bed which was fine.

What about the mattress on the floor for now, to see if that works?

crazycatlady5 · 27/02/2018 12:34

I would look into baby proofing her room and getting a floor bed. Mine has always despised being crammed in a cot (I would too to be honest) and she’s currently in with me at 1, when she starts sleeping longer stretches I’m gonna get her a floor bed.

Neither of mine have slept in a cot.

DD went into a full size single at 16mo.

DS has gone onto a double mattress on the floor at 12mo. (Would've gone for a single but we had a double - I don't think he needs a double! Grin)

I don't really see the need for toddler beds but I certainly wouldn't worry about her not going in a cot if you think she'd do better in a bed. Both of mine use foam wedge bed guards.
