Toddler bed help

Hi, recently moved my 2 year old lb into a toddler bed (week ago) due to him trying to climb over the cot rails. Every night I find him asleep on the floor (with blanket over him) Is this normal behaviour? When I speak to my mum over it she says i should put him back in the cot as he is too young for a bed? Im a first time mum so any advice would be helpful. Thanks

If he's happy on the floor, let him be or put pillows/a soft rug down for him.
The floor is safer than a cot he's trying to climb out of.
As long as he has a bed if he wants it, then you're fine.

If he's trying to climb outbif a cot, he needs to be in a bed.
On the floor is fine - agree with some extra blankets on the floor in case he wants to make a nest. You can always move him back into bed when you spot him on the floor.

Thanks for the reply. We have thick carpet up stairs so he's not on a cold floor. When I find him I pop him back in the bed and he sleeps the night. I didn't see a problem with him sleeping on the floor but I've had my family having a go about it. Wouldn't think he was my son and not theirs!

That's adorable!

I'd put back ina cot. He doesn't need to be in a bed. Not staying in the cot is exactly the same issue as not staying in bed. I find that dealing with the issue is easier when in a cot than in a bed. Soon he'll realise he can open the floor and get out the room in the night, or vault through stair gate. So it would ultimately need dealing with if happening in my house.

FATEdestiny · 24/02/2018 16:51

... open the door (not floor)...

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 24/02/2018 16:53

My 5 yr old does this occasionally. I just pop her back when she's asleep. I don't really think it's a problem.

FATE yiu ever heard the crash when a child (23 months and then 18months in this house) launches themselves out off a cot? It is heart stopping for a few seconds til you hear the wail. If kids are close to climbing out, cots are not the best place to be.

PotatoesOfTheCarribean · 25/02/2018 00:44

We had a travel cot mattress that I just put under the bed, and pulled out once DS was in bed.

My DD did this for naps for a short while after taking the sides off, she figured out the bed was more comfortable soon enough though! I would stick to the bed because the dangers of falling whilst climbing out of a cot are worse than sleeping on the floor

Rolls eyes

Dear god, get over yourself. 13 odd years of SAHM parenting 4 children I've had several far worse one-off heart stopping moments. Stop guilt tripping others to agree with you.

One time face planting a wall from an unstabilisered bike doesn't mean back to stabilisers or no more bike riding. It means back on asap and extra thought to safety. One fall from a cot doesnt mean no cot, it means consider the safety more closely. Hmm

Alanna1 · 25/02/2018 22:13

We just used a mattress on the floor for this stage.

DameSquashalot · 25/02/2018 22:17

I don’t think SandLand was trying to guilt trip anyone? Everything I read advised removing cot sides when the cold tries to climb out.

DameSquashalot · 25/02/2018 22:18

Cold??!!!! CHILD

Scrumptiousbears · 25/02/2018 22:22

We recently took the side off our cot/cot bed for our nearly 2 year old. Not as she was climbing out but we thought we'd try. She also climbed out the bed and curled up behind the door with her comforter. Clearly she liked the security of the bars so we put them back on.

SequinsOnEverything · 25/02/2018 22:23

We moved dd2 to the cot bed at the same age and for a while she'd fall asleep on the floor in the doorway of her room. She'd take her pillow and duvet there and just wouldn't stay in bed. Then one day she just started sleeping in bed. We didn't change anything. I'm sure he'll do the same at some point.
