Co-sleeping - breastfeeding and winding

Hello! Currently doing a mix of cot and co-sleeping with our 3 week old but not sure how co-sleepers breastfeed? I sit up but is there a way of doing this without waking too much?

And how do you wind them if not sitting up? I have fallen asleep while holding him up... which isn't great!

Go sleep with both my dd and ds. Feed them lay down on my side I’m basically half asleep feeding them / fall back asleoo them sucking on my boob and I don’t wind them

Co sleep not go sleep

I feed in bed by lying on my side with baby lying in front of me, on his side, feeding. I sit him up to wind but he doesn't always need it at night, I guess sometimes he just has a little drink rather than a big feed.

Generally breastfed babies don't need winding in the way bottle fed babies do.
If you cosleep make sure you are safe. Arm above babies head, leg up against babies feet so baby can't move up or down. No pillows, no duvet, no partner next to baby, bed guard...then baby can feed while you lay on your side. I used to balance myself so I always felt I would drop backwards rather than forwards but I never did, I was always totally aware of any even if I drifted off while feeding.

Same as Betty. Usually if you feed lying down at night they don't need winding.

I couldn't do it properly until DS stopped needing winding, I think he was around 3 months but I'm not entirely sure. Before that he had a habit of pooing during a feed so I had to change him anyways. It definately helped my tiredness not having to get out of bed though.

I feed lying on my side. Practice during the day first. Line the baby up stomach to stomach with you and their eye (seriously) level with the nipple. Sorry if it's obvious, but you feed from the bottom breast (the one next to the bed) although advanced users with less engorged boobs can feed from the top one too apparently. I have to sort of hoik my boob out from my armpit, but my boobs are saggy (now bfing dd3)! Your bottom arm curls under your pillow or over the baby's head and you put the top one over the baby to hold them in place till they're latched/stable. My dd rolls onto her back when she's done and doesn't need winding, although she really does when I feed her sitting up during the day. Makes me think there's something wrong with my daytime positioning!

By the way I strongly recommend reading "Sweet Sleep" about co-sleeping safely.

Thank you giraffes that's exactly the kind of basic guide I needed. .. weird as he seems to need less winding at night and doesn't throw up or anything then which he dies in day! So maybe winding not strictly necessary...

Learn to feed lying down. It takes a bit of practice but it’s soooooo worth it.

And try not winding and see what happens. Mine only needed it every now and then.

arbrighton · 03/02/2018 20:36

womaninthemirror

That assumes perfect latch and manageable flow

I can assure you that my bf baby needed A LOT of winding early on.

GiraffesCantDoMentalArithmetic · 03/02/2018 21:33

2 out of 3 of my bf babies have needed a lot of help with wind, but surprisingly not when feeding lying down. Perhaps it is to do with a forceful let down which isn't so overwhelming in that position?

blueberry did you give it a go yet?

Blueberrycheesecake1 · 03/02/2018 22:26

Really interesting! Going to try tonight. Although currently in middle of a marathon cluster feed session so am hoping this means minimal wake ups... (optimistic! )
