15 months, hitting cot bars a lot: move to bed?

DS is 15 months and off the top of the charts tall (height of 19 month old on the 99.6th centile). He's always been a dreadful sleeper. Among all the other potential problems that we haven't solved, he is getting tangled in cot bars a lot when sleeping. He rolls onto his side, puts his arms through, tries to put his legs through (in sleeping bag), gets tangled, wakes up.

Is 15 months too young to put him in a low trundle bed with toddler-bed sides added to it? Wearing a sleeping bag, sometimes with a light blanket over the top, so not with lots of sheets etc to get tangled in.

You could but would probably need stair gate across his room or across stairs just in case of night wandering

Have you seen those mesh panels that go round the cot and stop legs and arms getting stuck? Like this there's lots of different brands.

We put DD into a full size single bed at 16mo - but she had coslept up to that point so was used to her foam wedge bed guards.

I've just moved 12mo DS from our bed onto a double mattress on the floor and that's worked really well. He's still in his sleeping bag and wriggles about all over the place but doesn't get tangled up.

My DS (20m) is constantly getting stuck between the bed and the bedgaurd so you might have a new problem.

Montessori style mattress on the floor?

help1978 · 02/02/2018 08:33

I'm assuming you've tried cot bumpers all the way round?

SuperBeagle · 02/02/2018 08:34

Yes, I was going to suggest cot bumpers?

15 months seems quite young to be moving to a bed, even if he is taller than average.

I put dd into a toddler bed at 16mths because we had the same issue - can't say she slept better but she was more settled. We put a gate on her door to stop her wandering but tbf she never did and still doesn't

teaandbiscuitsforme · 02/02/2018 08:51

Camomila My two both like the foam bed wedges as bed guards. They go under the sheet so no gap to get tangled in. They're also quite comfy so DD often snuggles into hers.

Schwanengesang · 02/02/2018 09:14

Can someone link to the foam wedges?

By trundle bed i mean mattress on a slat base about 2 inches off the floor, which is better than mattress on the floor, which would go mouldy

Gosh no way could input my 16mo in a bed, he'd just keep getting out! Mesh sounds best to me

Schwanengesang · 03/02/2018 07:47

He's nearly tall enough for the cot to be unsafe. So will have to do bed soon anyway. By sleeping bag I mean grobag

Next question is where to get a trundle bed base...

I would exhaust every possible avenue before moving a toddler that age to a bed!

teaandbiscuitsforme · 03/02/2018 08:36

My DD has never got out of her bed and she went in at 16mo. Why would she? She's asleep! My 12mo has just gone on a mattress on the floor and again, not crawled off yet. He's either asleep or he's up for the day and we've picked him up.

keepitgoing · 03/02/2018 16:44

Just because he's tall doesn't mean he needs to be out of a cot

Teaandbiscuits she's not asleep at the beginning of the night though! Hmm

Jdabbers · 03/02/2018 16:48

Hi OP

I don't have a suggestion but I have this same issue with my DS. He's moving around so much in his sleep he wakes himself touching the bars and is annoyed as he can't settle. He's always been a poor sleeper.

We considered a bed also but I think he'll roll out of that too!!
