My newborn makes grunting noises in sleep and seems unsettled.

Hi all.
My two week old is a good sleeper. However after feeding she grunts, groans, squirms, and yelps for a good while. This happens moreso at night. She's very loud. I'm wondering if she's in discomfort and is unwell. She had had some pooing delays but that has rectified itself now. Does anyone have any suggestions? She's also a food feeder. This is getting worse over the last few nights.
Thanks!

Newborns are incredibly noisy sleepers. We used to call ours the snuffle pig. Grunting, groaning, squeaking, farting, sighing. I miss it now they’re older ☹️

All sounds pretty normal to me. Is she having a good burp before she goes down?

KatnissMellark · 01/02/2018 08:04

Totally normal!

Phillipa12 · 01/02/2018 08:05

Are you winding her enough at night? Only because i always winded my 4 more during the day than at night as it was night time and i was exhausted.

Raheen · 01/02/2018 08:26

I'm finding the winding a bit difficult with her at times. Maybe I'm not as diligent at night. She's not a great winder (or I'm not). So she's def not having a good burp.

It sounds normal. I had no idea how loud tiny babies are when they sleep before I had my daughter!

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 01/02/2018 08:33

I remember how noisy my DD was when very young, this sounds quite normal.

beckieperk · 01/02/2018 09:58

My ds is the same. He's sleeping well but keeps me awake for ages. Had very little sleep last night so hoping for a nap today.....fingers crossed.
How old is your LO?
At our 6 week check hv and dr said its normal. #sob

WinteryWalk · 01/02/2018 09:59

Yep sounds right, like having a little piggy in your room!

beckieperk · 01/02/2018 09:59

Sorry.....just seen it says 2 weeks old. Lack of sleep makes me a crap reader apparently. Grin

My DD was exactly the same! I wasn’t winding her very well, so following advice on here I made sure I always got a decent burp up before putting her down. I also started using a drop of infacol before every feed, which seemed to make burping a little easier. When she was well winded, she was definitely more settled (but still quite noisy!!)

arbrighton · 01/02/2018 21:11

DS was noisy for a long time. He was windy but just noisy even if well winded (+1 for infacol, helped us, or at least I believe it did!)

Everyone told me it was normal/just sing/just digestion (which often it is). However, in our case, it turned out to be silent reflux. Even when he was treated with medication, he still grunted all night. It was only when I discovered, by accident, that giving him a dose at a night feed caused him to stop grunting entirely. I only mention this so it's something to have in mind, in case your baby displays any other symptoms of silent reflux. I wish I'd worked out that it was reflux earlier, and not wind, then I could have treated it sooner.

Lemondrop99 · 01/02/2018 22:29

*sing = wind

Lilonetwo · 01/02/2018 22:31

Although newborns are incredibly noisy and grungy. Do persist with winding her. Pat her on the back until you get a burp. Don't put her back down without her burping Smile it definitely helps

Lemondrop99 · 01/02/2018 22:31

I also had success getting burps out by sitting baby in my knee and jiggling knee while patting back, but also bending baby back and forth and around in circles at the waist.

Phillipa12 · 02/02/2018 06:26

I remember doing that with my 4 lemondrop, now exdh thought it very odd!

Thanks all!
