Can’t settle my baby after night feeds

My baby is 4.5 weeks old and I’m really struggling with being unsettled and unhappy after I’ve fed him at night.

He’s breastfeeding and he’s lovely and settled and easy during the day, but at night he struggles and gets upset after each feed. I think he’s gassy - he wiggles and looks uncomfortable - but I cannot for the life of me get him to burp (I’ve had about 3 tiny burps out of him in his whole life!). I’ve tried various techniques (Over my shoulder and patting, sitting him up and rotating, walking about with him and bouncing... plus infracol and gripe water) with no real success. He passes a lot of gas when he goes to the toilet, so I know it’s in there, just coming out the wrong end!

It’s really difficult because he needs feeding every couple of hours, and I’m spending most of the time between trying to wind him - so by the time I get him down it’s usually time to start the whole process again. I can tell he’s shattered too, he often falls asleep right after a feed, but when I put him down he’s awake within 10 mins, squirming and crying.

I know that at this age broken sleep is absolutely normal, but if anyone has any advice or tips I’d be really grateful.

Have you tried infacol? Xx

I really sympathise; I used to have to hold my baby upright for at least 20 minutes after each night feed when all I wanted to do was put her down to sleep.
Have you tried putting a rolled up towel under the head end of the cot or Moses basket stand? We did that and i think it did help; don’t put anything under the mattress though put it under the very bottom of whatever he sleeps in to tilt it up

Elle, I tried it for a couple of days and didn’t see any difference. Should I try again? Did it work for you?

He’s in a bedside cot thingy, so I think I can have one end higher than the other. I’ll give that a go, thank you.

Hi. My HV said infacol needs a few days to build up before it starts working, it's worth trying it again along with raising the cot.

Infacol helped my Dd, but it did take about four days before we noticed.

I also hold my Dd upright for a bit after feeds.

One of my dd only seemed to burp if we held her in the 'tiger in the tree' hold and rubbed her back
