What to do when they sit/crawl then cry at night

My lo is 10 months and has recently learnt the new tricks of pulling himself up into a seated position and getting himself into a crawling position. Great for in the day but at night he is getting himself into these positions then does not seem to know what to do next. Sometimes he does not even seem to be awake but is usually quite upset. Should I help him back to lie down, comfort him in these positions, or what?

Definitely help him down (I'd give him a cuddle first as well because it's only a phase).

if you lie him back down does he go back to sleep? My ds does that during the day but not at night- i think its because he sleeps on one of those grobags - it stops him wriggling around so much!

My lo is in a grobag as well and he is all over the place in it. I found the poor thing in the crawling position, length ways in the cot, rocking backwards and forwards crying asleep.

Unfortunately we are having major sleep problems anyway and this issue seems to be compounding the problem. We have progressed from feeding to sleep to holding to sleep and sometimes just comforting in the cot but this rarely works.

I just did not want to do the wrong thing when it came to this issue

oh no poor you. Is he in his own room or co sleeping? I found putting my ds in his own room helped his sleep pattern sort itself out(he was waking a lot aswell) I think my DH's snoring was waking him up. sorry i can't help more- not sure what the right thing to do is.

My dd has got v good at sitting (even standing at times at night) up in the night. I just go in lie her back down and pop dummy back in. if she stirs again, I will give a cuddle and then do the same.

Have also found that dd now likes sleeping on front with knees tucked up. It looks quite comfortable, but she seems to like it!!!!

Thanks everyone, i am hoping it is a phase he will pass through once he is more proficient in getting up and down and we move through the stages of our 'sleep programme' I think the pulling himself to standing is the next thing on his list to practise!

LOL but sympathetically. DD, also ten months, started sleep crawling when she got mobile (at 7 months), can now cruise in her grobag (that was a shock!) but now she's nearly walking and is much better at crawling, she seems less driven to need to practice in the middle of the night. I've found she went through phases of practicing any new skill she was working on during the day at some point at night. We co-sleep so it's been a bit uncomfortable at times! DD also sleeps in the bum in the air position sometimes, plus the 'one leg and one arm out at right angles pushing bum into the air' position. No idea how she sustains that in her sleep.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think it will subside when your LO feels he's mastered the crawling. DD is, unfortunately, using the early hours to practice her new noises... aaarrrghh!
