So similar to my thread about night sleeps - where does your lo sleep in the day? Mine currently only sleeps on me. Id like to start a routine but if sids doesnt recommend them sleeping alone i dont know how i can put him to nap in a dark room or his cot unless i sit with him. Any suggestions? He just wont sleep downstairs unless on me

You could lie on your bed while baby sleeps in the cot

In lounge in:

  • travel cot
  • spare cot (lots of cheap second hand ones to buy)
  • moses basket
  • bouncy chair
  • on floor
  • in pram parked in the room
  • in pram insert

Personally, I went first bouncy chair until 6 months old.

In the day time he naps on his bean bag... or in the car if we are out and about and I'll leave him in there when we get home. If I didn't have a bean bag I'd probably use bouncer

Jellybabie3 · 07/01/2018 10:16

Huhi hadnt tried a bean bag. Is it a soecial baby one or just a bean bag?

in the car if we are out and about and I'll leave him in there when we get home

This completely goes against all safe sleeping guidance.

TittyGolightly · 07/01/2018 10:24

I think 3 months is far too young for any sort of structured routine.

Randomlywondering · 07/01/2018 10:29

At 3 months my twins nap on me, in their bouncy chairs, next to me (awake) on the bed, next to me (napping!!) In their cribs, in the car seat, in the pram or sometimes on the floor mat.
Basically there's no routine. They still want to sleep between most feeds. If they're getting cranky I will do more to encourage this.
I'm also quite strict with the SIDS advice so the babies are with someone at all times.

mummaaksm · 07/01/2018 17:30

OP I ordered a baby bean bag from amazon it was £30 best thing ever!!!
And whoops didn't mean to make it sound like I left him in the car obviously!!!!!!!!!
He stays asleep in his car seat in the house

redjoker · 07/01/2018 17:34

In either his bouncy chair or in his sleepyhead which is on the sofa. Wouldn't feel happy with him in his cot upstairs yet I don't think.

arbrighton · 07/01/2018 21:11

Are bean bags actually rated safe for sleep though?

mummaaksm · 08/01/2018 10:51

As far as I am aware yes. There is a huge company online called bean bag planet I think .... it's worth checking them out :) I've had several midwives and HV say how comfy he looks on there so I guess they would've said if it wasn't safe? They come with a safety harness on as well so they can be strapped in

CaurnieBred · 08/01/2018 11:07

We got DD used to having most of her naps in her pram (outside, but that is a whole other thread). It meant that we could be anywhere and she would happily go down for her nap, and I wasn't tied to the house. If she wasn't in her pram, then she was in the car seat as we were out on manoeuvres. I kept a book in the car if I wasn't napping myself (no smart phones in those days) and I still drive past various car parks and laybys and think, "we napped in there".

pastabest · 08/01/2018 11:11

mumma it's actually the car seat that is the problem, I think that's what titty was meaning. Current guidelines are no longer than 30 mins for newborns in a car seat.

OP I had like a swingy chair thing I put DD in for naps from about 2 months - 5 months. It just sat in which ever room I was in at the time.

PineappleScrunchie · 08/01/2018 11:15

Three month olds are newborns anymore.

PineappleScrunchie · 08/01/2018 11:22

Also, is there an official guideline which says no more than 30mins? I’ve read the research paper behind the headlines (here is the NHS summary). It wasn’t studying how long it is safe to be in a car seat and I’d just assumed it was poor science reporting by newspapers.

Jellybabie3 · 08/01/2018 11:29

I think its 2 hours for a non newborn baby....i used to work on the car seat department at mothercare! May have changed though.

Thanks all. I will persist with the sleepyhead or resign myself to baby cuddles on the sofa (poor me! Wink)

Ahhhh I see. I wouldn't consider my son a new born anymore! And what about long car journeys Hmm he doesnt stay asleep longer than 30 mins I'd say once we are home... thank you for your input though ladies x

mummaaksm · 08/01/2018 11:38

And best of luck OP!

mummaaksm · 08/01/2018 11:45

Also... my pram has an attachment for the car seat too so you can keep them in there and push them around ... is this not good either??

TittyGolightly · 08/01/2018 11:47

Very not good. I cringe when I see tiny babies in car seats on travel systems in town/Ikea/retail parks. It’s fine for a quick 10 min dash into Tesco or motorway services, but not good for their breathing/oxygen levels when tiny, or their backs when they’re bigger.

bringmesunshine7 · 08/01/2018 11:48

On me, in crib, in bed with me, on couch, in bouncy.

TittyGolightly · 08/01/2018 11:49

We took DD to DH’s Home town when she was 6 weeks old. The 250 mile trip usually takes 3.5-4 hours on a good run. That journey took 8 hours because we stopped every hour to get her out of her seat/for me to express/for her to feed or just have a little walk around and a break from driving.

mummaaksm · 08/01/2018 12:05

Well this have given me something to think about!
Although in all honesty... I think the max he's been in there and that's from 6 weeks old is probably 2 hours ... for example 45 min car drive and finishing his nap when we arrive / get home. This has got me thinking though! I never even thought to look into this Blush

spinningpenguin · 08/01/2018 12:27

According to the official advice babies should always sleep in their cot. We got a baby monitor with camera so we can keep an eye on him, maybe this would be a solution? Baby bouncers, car seats etc are dangerous for sleeping due to positional asphyxiation. Sleeping on you is fine as long as you are awake yourself. Good luck mama😀

TittyGolightly · 08/01/2018 13:20

No it isn’t.

Babies under 6 months old should not sleep in a room alone. This is because there is a potential risk that they forget to breathe. Hearing an adult breathe can remind them to. A video monitor does not address that.

happymummy12345 · 08/01/2018 13:27

My ds only ever slept in his crib, then cot upstairs. Personally I didn't want to let him sleep downstairs because despite what the guidelines say, I believed it would be better if he slept upstairs where it was quiet. I always had a video monitor, and I checked on him regularly. He was fine.
