Sleepyheads overnight? And what about MyHummys?

TLH0307 · 16/12/2017 19:12

I'm due in Feb with my first (so I'm pretty much clueless as you'll gather) and I've heard from lots of mums that baby will be fine to sleep in a sleepyhead overnight in her cot next to us as it always worked for them...however I'm a little dubious about whether it will be safe?! If she's not going to sleep in it at night then I'm not going to bother getting one, as I don't want her to get too used to feeling "snuggled" by the sleepyhead then being demoted to a flat mattress at night 🙈

Also, any experiences with MyHummys or Ewan the Dream Sheep? My fiancé reckons it's a gimmick but apparently they're fab!

Also also, I'm in a flap thinking I've bought too much stuff. She's got a Moses basket for downstairs during the day while she's very young, a swinging cradle which I was thinking of putting next to our bed for the first 6 months (it locks so it doesn't always swing if she doesn't like it), then a cot bed for when she moves to her own room eventually. Do you think it will be confusing and unsettling for her if she sleeps in a Moses basket during the day but a cradle at night? Or will it not matter and am I worrying too much? 😂

Thanks in advance, I am one confused and stressed out lady!x

I think sleepyheads are the only ones that are tested to really high standards and are safe to use overnight. We did for 8 months! Took it everywhere with us!

babyinthacorner · 16/12/2017 19:41

As for everything else - your baby will do what it does! You can but try all these things and see what works for you. We didn't buy anything for #1 before the birth, then went out in a panic when she was 2 days old buying dummies, vibrating bouncers, the lot! They didn't work either 😂

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 16/12/2017 19:43

We used the sleepyhead overnight for 3 months until she outgrew it - I'd really recommend it

tealandteal · 16/12/2017 19:46

We have a ollie the owl white noise toy and would definitely recommend it but I would say try the white noise videos on YouTube first. If little one responds well to it you can buy a white noise toy if you want to. We had a moses basket, carry cot for the pram and cot bed. DS hated the moses basked so slept in the pram in the day downstairs and we moved his cot bed in with us for nights. If you don't have room for the cot in your room the cradle will be good

Bobbiepin · 16/12/2017 19:48

We used the sleepyhead on and off overnight for a while. DD sleeps fine in her moses basket (as long as the matress has been by the radiator for a while) and will be moving into her cot bed when she's 6 months.

Figgypuddingandcustard · 16/12/2017 19:54

I would wait until your baby is born and see what she prefers, as some babies can be quite particular on where they sleep. My DS like his pram during the day ( has to be pushed out in it to sleep) and Moses basket at night, he's 5.5 months almost too big for it but won't sleep in either the travel cot or proper cot, bouncing chair or car seat unless car is moving. I know other babies who like to sleep in their car seats or bouncing chairs. If you need something urgently after your baby is born you can always use next day delivery or Amazon prime.

GummyGoddess · 16/12/2017 19:59

Sleepyhead is excellent, would recommend that. Ewan was rubbish but can I recommend "Baby got colic" on YouTube? Sent mine to sleep for months during his naps.

actino · 16/12/2017 20:00

I have Euan but it's not useful. Dd isn't into the Hoover noise and a 20 min cycle isn't long enough. I use a hair dryer must on an app on my phone on a 40 or 60 min cycle.

I'm sure some babies love Euan, but you won't know until you meet your baby.

happylantern · 16/12/2017 20:03

I'm pregnant with my first too so I'm also clueless, but my nephew is now 15 months old and adores Ewan the sheep, I bought it for him when he was born Smile

NameChange30 · 16/12/2017 20:06

The MyHummy is better than Euan IMO as it has a sensor so it comes back on if baby moves or makes a noise. IT also runs for 60mins IIRC. The only thing is that it’s only got one button and it’s tricky to adjust the volume and other things, so if buying again I’d look at alternatives with sensors like Ollie the Owl or Whisbear.

I wouldn’t get a Sleepyhead yet - best not to use it unless you absolutely have to (we bought one in desperation but it was difficult to wean baby off it).

Marley45 · 16/12/2017 20:08

We love our sleepyhead and are now using the next size up. Best thing we bought I think! We even took it to Menorca!
Ewan is hopeless. 20 mins just isn't long enough. I've got an app that plays white noise so I leave that running in the nursery now while my baby sleeps.

TLH0307 · 16/12/2017 20:57

Thank you ladies!! I went to mothercare today and nearly had a meltdown like "do we need this too?!" So it's nice to hear from people who have tried them!

We have pretty much the same set up, Moses basket downstairs (which she will not sleep in!), swinging crib in our bedroom with the sleepy head and Ollie the owl inside and a cot bed in her room for when she's older. She's 6 weeks now and has only just started responding to white noise this week so use an app or YouTube videos at the start to see if baby likes it and keep trying every so often. We bought the sleepyhead when she was 2 weeks old as she wouldn't sleep other than on us and it's brilliant, but a big expense so wait to see what kind of baby you have.

seven201 · 16/12/2017 23:16

We had a sleepyhead. Used it in bedside crib at night and just moved the sleepyhead downstairs for the day so no need for a Moses basket. We had a Ewan but then upgraded to a whispbear (it's got a noise sensor so turns on in the night). We still use it now for 18month dd.

GummyGoddess · 16/12/2017 23:31

DC had all his naps on me until about 7 months old when it took about a month to transfer him into the cot for naps as we didn't want to sleep train him or let him cry. I used to lay on the bed with him while he slept, then I made a little pod for him to sleep in (pillows and blankets under the duvet he was on top of) before finally getting a proper pod.

Now he goes into the cot for naps happily and goes straight to sleep! He sleeps through the night in his pod too, he miraculously started to be able to get himself back to sleep at about 12 months. It feels miraculous as this is the child who when through a spate of waking every 45 minutes for weeks on end, needing to be fed back to sleep each time.

FartnissEverbeans · 17/12/2017 08:17

You can download an app called Sound Sleeper which I think is better than Ewan. No batteries, cheaper and last longer. You can select different sounds - hairdryer etc - and it'll detect when baby is moving and switch itself on

Lemondrop99 · 17/12/2017 09:58

We've tried a lot of different white noise. The MH was no good for us as my DS is a noisy sleeper and as soon as it turned off, he's grunt and it turned back on again! So it ate batteries. I also found the noise tinny and annoying, and there was no rain sound (my DS favourite).

We tried phone apps. Work fine and great when out and about. But I found I lost my phone to my newborn most of the time!! Also, you need to play white noise reasonably loud to be effective and the phone isn't loud enough unless it's close to his head 😕

We've purchased a white noise machine off Amazon for £30 and it's great. We let it run all night so it helps DS settle if he stirs.

We decided to wait and see if we needed a Sleepyhead, and we have not. Despite what is said, it is NOT approved for overnight sleeping. It says not to be used unsupervised (you can't supervise when you're asleep).

Now don't get me wrong, thousands of parents use these with no problem and I'm not aware of any incidents linked to Sleepyheads. They are in all likelyhood perfectly fine. Still it made me uncomfortable enough to not use one unless necessary.

My DS has slept in his crib overnight since day one. Not because we forced it on him, he just likes it. I never wanted to co-sleep but the few times I tried it, DS would not settle! He likes being swaddled which makes his crib cosy. Lots of people say their babies didn't like being swaddled as they like their arms up. We use the Love to Dream swaddles which I think are BRILLIANT. Arms up so baby can rub face and suck hands to soothe, but still nicely swaddled so feel secure and can't stared awake. Also zip on a lot easier that a traditional swaddle. Cheaper than a Sleepyhead, why not it first? You can always panic buy a Sleepyhead a few days in, if you feel you need it. My friend uses a LTD swaddle in a Sleepyhead.

We’ve used a my hummy since bub was about 4 months, he’s 11 months now and sleeps through 7-7 (has done from about 6 months) obviously Its not just down to the my hummy, but I do think it helps. It also helped him to nap at nursery too which was quite a loud environment. Good luck :) xx
