1 yr old and cot/cosleeping issue

Ds has just turned one and has stopped sleeping the whole night in his cot. Previously would sleep 7-6 no wake ups then We went on holiday and we had to cosleep for the 2.5 weeks as there was no where for DS to sleep then shortly after returning he got a really bad cold and chest infection so he slept with me for comfort.
He now wakes anywhere between 1 and 5am and once awake won’t go back to sleep unless we put him in our bed. He is clearly not fully awake as he sleepily sits up and rolls around but no amount of laying down and leaving the room gets him back to sleep. After a short time he wakes himself up then he gets hysterical crying. After over an hour I give up and put him in our bed and he falls straight back to sleep.
DH has just started a new job and is now on shifts and this is killing him and he is beyond exhausted. I’m all out of ideas and need some advice please

If you want baby to sleep in the cot, then you have to be consisting in offering no other option than the cot.

Imagine you were a single parent and on medication that affected your sleep. You would then not be able to (safely) cosleep no matter how much you wanted to. So you would have to make cot sleeping work, because there would be no other option.

I wouldn't leave baby alone in the cot to go you sleep. I would repeatedly keep calmly and patiently lying back down. Over and over and over again, all without getting stressed or angry about it. I would keep my hand on back/chest when put down, to help baby settle. Then just keep going for as long as it takes until baby stays lying down. Then keep hand on chest/back until asleep.

Can DH sleep in the spare room?

readyforapummelling · 10/12/2017 12:51

Watching with interest as I have a 10 month old who slept through in cot, then I spent a week in hospital with meningitis and when I came out she decided the cot is the devil. I'm not sure if this is a separation thing as I couldn't see her for the week I was in hospital due to being quarantined.
FATE I will give your method a try. It's just difficult not to give in and pop her in my bed as I work 3 days a week and miss my sleep!

Sorry to hijack thread OP Thanks

FATE, I know your right but it’s so difficult with poor DH working the shifts he does but I guess I know I don’t really have any other choice.
We don’t have a spare room unfortunately.
